You're not getting away easily

“You don’t?” she interjected with more than a little shock. Not that it was a problem that Connor apparently didn’t enjoy eating sweets or - crisps, whatever those were - clearly not important - but like, she couldn’t imagine a life without her African gran’s chocolate cookies. They were literally the size of her hand, and her gran was kind of mock-strict about making sure she only had one after a meal on account of how much sugar was in them (though now that she was a Teenager, Marley was sure she could talk her way into getting two) but they were the best cookies ever. Her gran made other great sweets, too, like apple pie with maple syrup drizzled in the cracks, but it was only her gran who made pie at all, whereas Marley’s other grandma and even her mum made cookies sometimes. So her gran’s cookies really stood out by comparison.

“I do like most cheese.”

Connor’s pause was easily interpreted as a chance to swoop in and continue the conversation, which she did happily. The benefit of hanging out with Connor, she thought, was that they always had a really easy conversation. He didn’t talk much, but he was a good listener, and he left her plenty of room to get out all of her thoughts and finish her sentences, which was in some ways better than when she was talking with other talkative people because then she always felt like she had to force her way to the front. But, nope, Connor let the attention stay on her, and since she was so good at carrying a conversation, they never had any awkward pauses.

“Cheese is pretty good,” she agreed. “Most types of cheese don’t really have a ton of flavour, I think, but that means it goes great with other types of food, and it’s nice that you’re able to combine it like that. Like, I prefer real cheese ‘cause it’s kinda chewy and you can melt it and stuff, but my mum is basically obsessed with Cheese Whiz. She’ll even use it in grilled cheese sandwiches, sometimes.” She made a face, nose wrinkling. Cheese Whiz wasn’t nearly as bad as mushrooms, but the texture wasn’t her favourite. Her mum really tried to buy real food for them to eat, which was always what Marley preferred because it was tastier (probably healthier too, but she didn’t care as much about that). Sometimes when she got busy with work, it was just hard for her to keep the fridge stocked, though. Marley tried not to complain directly to her mum or dad, but she complained to her friends about it. “It’s not, like, too bad, I guess, but it’s goopy and... I don’t know, it just feels weird to eat cheese out of a jar, you know?”

      • Not to say that I'm not trying - Connor, Fri Mar 24 04:33
To his utter lack of surprise, Marley hopped right in after his comment about cheese. To his surprise - although it shouldn’t have been, really - she proceeded to utterly baffle him within seconds.... more

Caught by surprise, she blinked at Connor a few times before bursting into giggles. He didn't have a very obvious sense of humour, but she had learned over the past twoish years that he could be... more

Great, now Marley was acting like he was stupid for not knowing what cheese in a jar was. Connor bristled a little bit. Well maybe she was the stupid one for eating cheese that came in a jar . There... more
            • You've been anything but! - Marley, Sun Mar 26 13:09
"That's one way to put it," she agreed brightly, or as brightly as she could manage through her mouthful of brownie. Innovative was too fancy of a word for something as boring as Cheese Whiz, but it... more

Well he shouldn’t have been surprised that Marley was prone to outbursts but Connor couldn’t say that he wasn’t surprised by the comment that had triggered this one. He was confused. Muggle food was... more
                • Let me help you with that - Marley, Tue Mar 28 00:48
“Well, yeah,” Marley returned, not picking up on his patronizing tone. “But that’s proof, isn’t it? A lot of Muggle food and wizard food aren’t very different at all, since they have the same food... more

Apparently he had offended Marley by explaining the nature of the world to her, which was somehow unsurprising. In Connor’s experience (largely at RMI), people who weren’t purebloods could get awful... more
