You've been anything but!

"That's one way to put it," she agreed brightly, or as brightly as she could manage through her mouthful of brownie. Innovative was too fancy of a word for something as boring as Cheese Whiz, but it got the point across. Some company engineer or chemist or whatever that job was called (she made a mental note to look it up later, but since that note was strictly mental, it was almost guaranteed she would forget) had been really smart in mixing the right ingredients together to make a creamy fake cheese. Cheese Whiz was so smooth, Marley felt pretty confident in assuming that there wasn't any real cheese in it at all, which meant that something entirely new had been invented.

That sounded cool, actually. Maybe she would have to add it to her Possible Careers list. Marley had started her list in the first grade, when there had been a new and super nice lady cleaning her teeth at the dentist's office. Dental hygienist was still on her list, although spelled incorrectly, as she'd written down before she really was good at the alphabet. It had also been followed by a wide variety of other options since. She still used the same piece of paper to record all these ideas; she just kept cutting it out of her old journals and pasting it back into a new one.

"Their food is usually so boring."

Was that offensive? She wasn't sure. She wasn't offended very often ever. But she wasn't gonna ignore it, either.

"No way!" Marley protested emphatically. It came out maybe a little louder than she intended it to, and she flashed an apologetic smile at a couple older students looking at them from nearby before turning her full attention back to Connor. "Don't be judgey just 'cause of Cheese Whiz. Because Muggle food is amazing. I mean, not always, of course, but wizard food isn't always great either." She was, for instance, quite opposed to chocolate frogs. (Not as adamantly as mushrooms, but still.) There wasn't any point in making candy jump around. That just made it awkward to eat, and made her feel guilty, like it was really a living frog she was biting the legs off. It took all the fun out of chocolate.

"But, like, there are so many different types of Muggle food. Like my gran," she offered, white teeth flashing in a wide smile at the thought of the woman. Gosh, this was like, the third time she'd thought of Gran tonight, wasn't it? Weird, but nice. Before coming to RMI, she used to spend almost half the year with her dad's family, but summers were always her time with Mum, so she saw her gran less and less these days. "She's from Brazil, but her whole family is African, and they have their own special foods. When I have Sunday dinners at her house, she always makes moqueca. It's like a fish soup with rice, and it's really really spicy, like your whole face is burning, but there's this cool coconutty flavour mixed in too that balances it. And the only thing she uses to make it are fresh market ingredients and her own spices," Marley concluded proudly. "She doesn't even have the recipe written down, it's all from her head." Her gran was incredible.

  • Well I wouldn't want to be rude - Connor, Sun Mar 26 09:15
Great, now Marley was acting like he was stupid for not knowing what cheese in a jar was. Connor bristled a little bit. Well maybe she was the stupid one for eating cheese that came in a jar . There... more

      • I do try my best - Connor, Mon Mar 27 04:28
Well he shouldn’t have been surprised that Marley was prone to outbursts but Connor couldn’t say that he wasn’t surprised by the comment that had triggered this one. He was confused. Muggle food was... more
        • Let me help you with that - Marley, Tue Mar 28 00:48
“Well, yeah,” Marley returned, not picking up on his patronizing tone. “But that’s proof, isn’t it? A lot of Muggle food and wizard food aren’t very different at all, since they have the same food... more
          • I wouldn't call any of this 'helping' - Connor, Mon Apr 10 04:45
Apparently he had offended Marley by explaining the nature of the world to her, which was somehow unsurprising. In Connor’s experience (largely at RMI), people who weren’t purebloods could get awful... more
