Damn it.

Marissa stared at the decorations that had made it to the highest corner of the secret passageways. She was sure there was a spell to bring them down, but she couldn’t remember what they would be. She’d maybe be able to reach if she stood on a table, thanks to her heels, but those heels had been discarded and she was walking barefoot. Her tired, tipsy brain did not at all feel like putting the heels back on. They were comfortable, charmed to be so, but even magic had some limits.

All in all, the party had seemed like a success. Marissa and Armaan threw a good party, but the red head was not at all interested in making a second one happen. She didn’t know for sure, but she guessed that Armaan would say the same about her. They were the type of people who got along from a distance. And very few interactions. Once she made it to the Aquila dorm room, Marissa planned on taking the first opportunity she could to tell Rose that she’d never plan an RMI party without her again. Then she’d tell Rose that Russell was awesome and deserved friends.

Also, she wanted to know what Rose and Emmett had been up to during the party. The Aquila had been a little too distracted through most of the night to keep track of what they were doing, too.

She sighed loudly at the decorations that Armaan (she assumed, she had no way of really knowing at this point) had hung up in an impossible corner for no reason. Just as she was considering what to do, since she suddenly forgot how to be a witch, there was a loud pop. Marissa jumped, then rolled her green eyes at Shifty Eyes.

“You missed the party,” she pointed out, placing a hand on her hip. Shifty cackled, floating just above the red head. She never really understood the poltergeist’s schtick. Mom said that he’d gone through a lot of weird stuff and was working on being a better ghostie, but she didn’t get it. He was a perfectly harmless guy who loved pranks. It bothered her that Lyra was his favorite house when he was so clearly an Aquila.

“Little Marissa Kendrick! How could you not invite Shifty?”

“Because I couldn’t find Shifty,” she sighed, “My bad. Here, you should take those decorations as an apology gift.”

She watched the poltergeist consider before grinning wickedly. “Oh yes, Shifty will make plenty use of these.” He gathered them in his hands. “To the house elves!”

He disappeared with another loud pop, and Marissa tried not to think about what weird prank he was going to play on house elves. Seriously, she didn’t understand her mom’s fondness for him, but he was never boring. That much was for sure. And Shifty always wanted to help her with party things. Yeah, next time, she wasn’t relying on Armaan. She’d use her usual planning committee to take care of this next time. She’d ask Rose, Emmett, Shifty, and Danny to help her plan for the welcome back bash. She already had an idea for the upper year party, too.

Okay, now to find my shoes. Marissa knew she’d discarded them somewhere, but she wasn’t entirely sure where. Great. She scanned the room, and that’s when she noticed that Danny was still there. Marissa didn’t know what to say at first, because suddenly it was Weird. Why was he still there? Last she’d checked, he was incredibly attached to Camilla. She cleared her throat and managed a smile when they made eye contact.

“Hey, have you seen my shoes? I tossed them somewhere and can’t find them. Also, what are you still doing here?”

Best party ever, Danny thought as the passageways began to clear. He spent a couple of minutes kissing Camilla goodnight (despite having spent most of the evening kissing her, it definitely wasn't... more

She immediately felt bad about her response. She didn’t mean to be rude or whatever. It’s not like her love life had ever been a secret from anyone. Even if she actively tried to keep it a secret, no ... more

Marissa seemed to want to talk at the same time, which was fine, because Danny hadn't been sure he was helping the situation. She was blaming Armaan for making her cranky, which caused him to grin a... more
