Teasing Danny helped. It was natural, and he always reacted in a super fun way. Whatever Marissa was feeling right now, she genuinely knew that Danny had not intended for his evening to turn out the way it did. It was almost like they had switched places. Usually, Marissa was the one who got to make out and do other fun things at her parties, and Danny was the one chatting and getting to know people. It was actually quite amusing that Danny was the one doing the making out in a public space this time, and Marissa was the one to get to know another student.

In fact, now that she thought about it, she was the only one who didn’t do the usual Marissa thing at parties. She lost track of Holland and Ruben at some point in the party, but they had seemed very close with each other the last she saw. That definitely was unexpected; Marissa hoped she could get some details out of the Lyra, later.

“I don’t think I’d describe myself as a damsel in distress.” She’d never really been a fan of the phrase. “I guess I’ll let you help, though.”

They searched for the shoes for a little while. They were in a bigger part of the passageways, but it still wasn’t huge. She couldn’t imagine them going very far. The passageways were strange, though, and sometimes seemed sentient. Would it really be that big of a surprise if her shoes were eaten up by the passageways? No. No, it would not.

“Hey, I was thinking,” she piped up after a couple minutes of searching, “the next time all of us hang out, we should invite Russell. I talked to him a lot tonight, and he seems sweet. He’s also been here for almost a whole year and basically has zero friends.” She knew that he has the eye thing going on, so maybe they shouldn’t invite him to the movies, but maybe he could come along the next time they got ice cream. She wasn’t actually sure what he’d find enjoyable outside of sitting in the dark.
