“Of course I invited you!” Marissa didn’t point out, of course, that invitations went out to every student in fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh year. Whatever Emmett was feeling about their summer, Marissa was still fond of the fourth year. So far, he was the only person to ever try and romance her in such an obvious, cliché way. It was cute. Marissa still wanted to be his friend. She definitely wasn’t ready for an actual relationship – something she discovered by trying it out with Emmett – so it was nice to know that he was still willing to talk to her and come to her parties.

And he was trying to dance. Aw, bless. Marissa smiled and absentmindedly nodded at him to keep going, already having too much fun with the music.

God, nothing could get Marissa in a better mood than dancing. Rose was definitely a witness to this. No matter how bad her day had gone, if the Aquila could just go into her room, blast her music, and dance it out, she’d feel better. By not, Rose was really good at just joining in whenever Marissa hosted a random dance party in their room. Marissa had really lucked out with her roommate.

“It was, ah, Holland. I let them put makeup on me again.”

Marissa’s green eyes lit up. “Holland is just incredible. I never would have known that there was makeup if you hadn’t told me.” Holland was just impressive. Marissa really enjoyed talking with her friend about all the different conspiracy theories they had. The red head had been a sounding board for many of Holland’s theories and suspicions since their first year orientation. Marissa, having grown up around tons of theater people covering a decent range of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, hadn’t been too thrown when she met Holland. When Marissa asked if they were a boy or a girl, Holland had told Marissa, “Sometimes.”

That immediately solidified Marissa’s like for her non-binary friend, and they continued their conversation on how wizards were often screwed over by the education system by being taught Arithmacy instead of math.

“I know,” Marissa responded to Emmett’s compliment of her party. She couldn’t tell if she was teasing or if her ego was talking; it was probably a little of both. “I mean, you’re Marissa Kendrick! Excitement’s what you do!”

“Damn right it is!” She raised her arms and let one hand run through her hair, which seemed to get wilder the more she drank. She should probably stop touching it. “It’s just nice to see everyone having fun.”

Oh, wait, now Emmett was serious. Marissa slowed her sways a little, trying to take in what he was saying. He was having feelings about the breakup, which Marissa really didn’t want to acknowledge. It wasn’t like she had many good options to ending her experiment with monogamy. What was she supposed to do, wait till school started and cheat on him? Marissa had done the responsible, good person thing.

“Emmett, we’re five by five,” she grinned, “Don’t worry about it. You’re here, you’re at the party, we’re having fun, you’re trying to dance.” Marissa giggled and placed her hands on his hips for a moment. “Just relax and listen to the music. Don’t try so hard.”

      • Scale of 1-10, how off am I? - Emmett, Mon Jan 16 22:39
She was a little pink, but not like him. Emmett had been growing a steady blush, but his was from the rush of things he felt about her, whereas hers was probably just from dancing. But with her hands ... more
        • I never said you were off! - Marissa, Wed Jan 18 10:32
Marissa couldn’t help but notice that Emmett’s face was getting a little red, and she wondered if hers was, too. She knew that, under the freckles, she was naturally going to be a little pink from... more
          • Sounds like a solid 0. Nice. - Emmett, Wed Jan 18 21:39
She agreed - he wasn’t super sure if that was a good thing or not, overall - and then took off, coming back a moment later with open hands. Well, at least there was no risk now of something getting... more
            • I never said that! - Marissa, Mon Jan 23 12:24
Sometimes, Marissa wished she hadn’t dated Emmett. Maybe the reason he couldn’t get himself to let go and just be himself was because he was younger. She hadn’t thought a year would make much of a... more
              • #Mixedsignals - Emmett, Mon Jan 23 23:56
“What do you want to do next?” It was a good question. Emmett wanted a lot to do a lot of things next, both in terms of dancing and, like, life. As far as the current party situation went, he mostly... more

Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was Emmett going back to being the funny nerd she knew, but Marissa was laughing a lot tonight. It was the good kind of laughter. It spread across her freckled... more
