I didn't mean it like that, I swear!

Apparently the attempted joke had also, unintentionally, turned into an insult. Or so it seemed, given Emmett’s obviously negative reaction to him. “Oh, no, it’s not dumb,” Russell protested weakly. “It’s, erm, kinda cool, actually. You’re probably gonna be the most comfortable one here, right?” Again, it turned into a question instead of what it should have been: a confident, reassuring statement of truth. (Further proof of why he really shouldn’t have been made Prefect. He didn’t know the other fifth-years well enough to have a guess on who it should have been instead, but surely any of them could’ve pulled it off better!)

Wilting, Russell resigned himself back to his normal inferior state and tried to make amends the only way he knew how: by spelling out his own faults for comparison. “I’m Muggleborn, and I don’t even know what it is or where it’s from. Mostly because I don’t watch movies, because - but, umm, that doesn’t matter,” he blundered. “Like, I’m one of the most likely here to recognize it and I don’t. So you can just… just make up whatever you want it to be and tell people that. It won’t… hurt anyone…?” He trailed off (again with a question, sigh) and reevaluated what he’d just said. Was he really encouraging lying?

...Well, it was just a costume.

...But lying about something so trivial?

Wrapped up in his own moral dilemma, Russell didn’t realize that a bigger one was occurring right beside him. Then Emmett burst out with something about someone not wearing pants. “What?” It took him a moment to figure out who Emmett was talking about, because Russell had been looking at his bare feet while he pondered and his attention was first caught by seeing Emmett’s hands in fists. Fists were both a) pretty alarming and b) pretty unhelpful in terms of indicating who they were directed at. They were just hanging at his side. But then Russell stared around and spotted Ruben.

As Emmett had said, the older student wasn’t wearing pants. “I, I, I don’t think so,” Russell stammered. Realizing he was staring, he hastily blinked away, cheeks burning. Ruben was kinda scary. He was taller than Russell, and sometimes followed him around in the hallways, and it was just weird. He was also, Russell was now realizing, not only taller but a lot bigger. No wonder he always got physical in Dueling Club. He tore himself away from staring again and glanced at Emmett. “Is that, well, normal for sleepovers? This is my first one, so…”
