It's Cheesy but Grate

He allowed himself to be lead by the hand to where Marissa had set up a television set, and maintained an expression of patronized appeasement as she issued instructions for him to follow. She could be bossy when she wanted to be, but seeing as doing what she asked ended with the movie and cuddling scenario Danny had favored, he acquiesced to carry out her orders. The Lyra crouched down to briefly examine the DVD cases. He had seen a few movies with Marissa and the rest of the group over the past few years, and he knew she preferred films about romance that made her laugh. No thank you. He identified something that purported to be Disney - another solid Marissa genre - but with pirates on the front that he hoped wouldn’t be too nauseating background noise, and popped the little shiny disc into the slot of the player. He dropped the controlling-pad-thingy into the pocket of his jacket, and picked up a carton of popcorn and a sealed bottle of water (the only drink he ever selected at Marissa’s parties, especially those just for the upper years) before he turned back to the cinematic set-up to find that Marissa had constructed a little nest. She held up the blanket as an invitation for him to join her, making a teasing comment about the passageways being chilly. Perhaps it was, in those shorts.

Danny hesitated. On the one hand, it was perfectly innocent, surely, to watch a movie with a girl under a blanket. For warmth. However, even he couldn’t pretend that watching a movie, under a blanket, in pyjamas (or what they had both decided passed as sleepwear), in the secret passageways, after curfew, with Marissa Kendrick, was an innocent collection of circumstances. The fact that his mouth was drying out again only served to emphasize the fact. Yet this is what he wanted, wasn’t it? To cuddle Marissa and catch up about the summer. Merlin help him, he returned the one-eyebrow-arched expression she had given him, and crossed the distance between them. With some minor difficulty, he held his drink and snack in one hand, then retrieved his wand to make them hover at elbow height. Hands now free, Danny tossed the remote from his pocket onto the blanket covering the approximate area of Marissa’s knees, and then reclined on her hill of pillows, pulling the sleeping bag blanket down over himself.

“My summer was good. I went skinny dipping.” She went what now? “Did stuff with one of the girls at my dance camp.” Danny needed that drink back.

Marissa went on to say some far less interesting things about Holland and Rose, but Danny wasn’t paying much attention - partly because the first two things she’d said were still clouding his thoughts, and partly because the knot tied in his belt had somehow slipped under him and was uncomfortable. “Hold that thought,” he muttered while he wriggled and tried to pull it back round to his front. Unfortunately the whole jacket twisted, pulling the seam tight on his shoulder. Now with restricted movement, Danny managed to grab the belt in one hand and attempted to pull the rest of the jacket back around, but he sighed and gave it up as a bad job. “This was a terrible idea,” he concluded aloud. “But it’s okay, I’ve got a far worse one,” Danny said to himself as he undid the offending belt and dispensed with the jacket altogether, discarding it to the side. Physically he was far more comfortable now, but psychologically the small, chirping part of his brain was now screaming at him accompanied by red, flashing warning signs. Studiously ignoring it, Danny took a deep breath, put his arm around Marissa’s shoulders, and summoned the refreshments to them. Adopting a laissez-faire attitude, and employing his very best attempt at nonchalance, he elected to disregard Marissa’s inquiry about his own summer; instead he looked resolutely at the TV screen as he said, “Skinny dipping, huh?”
