This pleases me

Still smirking, Ruben made a whining noise in the back of his throat when Holland whapped him. “Really?” His hand dropped soon after this. He didn’t wait to push his luck; in some ways, he was already lucky enough that they were still friends after Holland’s overreaction last year. The (technically only a year younger than him, but obviously infantile) kid had surely gotten his point by now, anyways. It was fun to gesture with that finger and see just how much Russell would squirm, but it wasn’t completely necessary. Just ninety-four percent or so.

Hen gave Russell an unnecessarily polite order, which resulted in a snort from the blonde. As if Emmett would ever use his words, like an adult, when he could sulk and whine from a distance instead. Pfft. Someone in Emmett’s position right now could only resolve it in two ways: actively confront Holland, or actively confront Ruben. Anything else, and who could possibly take him seriously? Ah, if only. Ignoring Emmett wasn’t the end of the world, but it would’ve been great to watch Holland say these things to his face and watch him shrivel.

Also would’ve been great to just knock him out, but that was true of many people Ruben interacted with. There were too many mediocre types around here.

Ruben, who had picked up the bottle of nail polish again as Holland attempted to get Russell to say something resembling coherent speech, couldn’t help but glance up at the sudden lack of Russell invading their space. “Huh.” He watched as the kid ran away. Russell running away from him wasn’t exactly unusual. Neither was Russell running into another person. But Russell apparently taking a puke break in the trash was something he hadn’t seen before, and also didn’t want to see. The Swede wrinkled his nose in disapproval. His little not-brother got sick like that sometimes, but it was always a real sickness, not for no reason. Just another sign of Russell’s deficiencies.

Shaking his head, he looked back down to finish painting his right-hand nails. “It looks like Emmett did not choose a very good… owl,” he noted casually, referencing Holland’s term. ‘Dog’ was the first that had come to his mind, but it implied a level of training, which in turn required intelligence at both ends, and his opinion of Emmett and Russell’s abilities to think was steadily dropping lower. A feat in itself, really. “What do you think is wrong with him?” He was genuinely curious to hear Holland’s opinion and so surprised himself by managing to ask the question in a tone that didn’t sound too judgey, at least not to his non-native-English-speaking brain.

Russell didn’t think that he’d ever had such a sudden reversal from burning-face-of-awkward-shame to freezing-face-of-awkward-death as when Ruben flipped him the finger. Hot and cold were opposites.... more

      • Can’t say I disagree - Holland, Tue Jul 25 16:47
Russell had seemed terribly nervous before Ruben told him to get lost, so maybe Holland should have been a little nicer when they talked to the boy. Or maybe not; after all, he’d decided to come... more
