Talk is cheap

“Right,” Holland said curtly, ignoring the sinking sensation in their stomach. “I don’t know wasn’t the same as “no,” but it was close enough. Holland had never asked anyone out before (well, there was Ruben, but given that they had already made out at that point Holland hadn’t truly considered it) and it hadn’t struck them that that was what they had just done until Danny answered.

And his answer did sound awful. Holland didn’t have estranged pureblood relatives who would be surveilling them—not to their knowledge, at least—but they understood his point. The entity Holland mentally referred to as the pureblood mafia was interested in what Danny did.

But Pearl Street wasn’t the only place they could go outside of school. Holland frequently went into Muggle parts of the city: usually to the Hill for lectures at the university, or to East Boulder if their parents Flooed over for an afternoon and took them out to lunch. The risk of being overseen by members of wizarding society couldn’t be high outside of the explicitly magical district. Besides, no one in Danny’s social sphere knew who Holland was. Even if there were pureblood mafia spies tailing Danny, Holland was anonymous to them; wizards didn’t have the advantage of the Muggle government’s citizen registry. And Holland habitually dressed in a more binary way when they knew they were going somewhere unfamiliar. Having to think about their safety in public with regards to presentation wasn’t limited to them dating, although it had been a consideration in the past. If you looked like a heterosexual couple, no one said anything, even if one member had blue hair.

So the pureblood mafia wasn’t the part that sounded awful. The awful part was the implication that Danny had no qualms about dating them inside school, but that it would be a problem outside of school. Dating them in public would be a problem for Danny, and that was a hard line for Holland. Barring some kind of time-turner accident that left them stuck in a less enlightened time, there was no set of circumstances under which they’d be in a relationship that necessitated secrecy.

All he was doing was proving their initial point: that Marissa wasn’t the only reason why nothing would happen. And yet when Holland had said that, Danny had responded with a noncommittal answer about needing to consider things, not a firm agreement. It was the exact same way he had responded when Holland had asked if he’d even want to make considerations, or just now. If Danny wasn’t interested then he should have given a clear answer to anything they’d said so far today. Holland could take a hint and this was hardly sparing their feelings.

“I guess things would be very difficult for you if it wasn’t a maybe, too,” they said, slightly sarcastic, deliberately invoking his phrasing. Their annoyance might be misdirected but damn it, what was the point of this conversation? Danny was the one who had started it, not them. Had he honestly pulled Holland into a passageway to point out all the reasons he wouldn’t date them? They had already been aware, thanks.
