Only reluctantly

Lucien followed her over to where the food was. Feeling a little thirsty, he reached for the punch bowl before pausing and pulling his hand back. What were the odds someone had spiked it? It wasn't long at all before the discomfort of scratchy-dry-throat won out over his debate, and he poured himself a glass. He was skeptical, sometimes, but that was usually aimed at specific people. On the whole, he wasn't a mistrustful type; he could put some faith in human decency and assume that those who wanted to drink had smuggled in their own bottles.

It was around this point that he realized that Francine was literally checking under the tables. Apparently his sarcasm was getting kind of rusty - not that it had ever been very obvious, but still. Swallowing a mouthful of punch, brown eyes blinked at her from behind his glasses. “That's great. Another hiding spot down.”

He grinned at her thanks, genuinely this time, and took another sip. It tasted pretty generic, but also pretty good. “Hey, you're welcome. Spies do have more fun. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have come at all,” he admitted, “if we hadn't been on duty tonight. It's important to keep an eye on every part of the school, you know?” From what he could remember, there hadn't been any major issues at prior parties, but it was always better to play it safe than to rely on past records. As Prefect, Lucien was ready for action.

...But not that type of action, he quickly amended. “I don't... uh.” He didn't dance. He didn't think the music was good. He didn't want to stay and actually party. All very true. All very rude, too. It was okay to be rude in laughing Alphonse down, but not Francine; she struck him as rather more delicate. So he changed his response to a more neutral “I don't really know how to dance to this music.”, which was equally true and less rude. His family occasionally went to nice parties, so he'd of course been taught the basics of formal dance, but the only casual dancing style he knew was swing and that only vaguely. Tipping back his glass again, his nose wrinkled unconsciously while he considered it. “Maybe we can try one song?” he hedged.

  • *A lot - Francine, Tue Jan 17 01:11
She saw his nose wrinkle - God, he’s a cutie - and got the feeling he was judging people, but that wasn’t too surprising. He was from one of those stuffy families, the ones where people had roman... more

      • Good, good. That's super convincing. - Francine, Wed Jan 18 20:56
He seemed hesitant. His initial response, while not even a full sentence, led to negative expectations. Francine did her best to stifle a pout, not wanting to guilt him into something he didn’t want... more
        • I'm good at pretending - Lucien, Fri Jan 20 13:00
She was much too excited about dancing, in his opinion, and Lucien had to scramble to put his cup down when she grabbed his hand again. He managed to get it on the edge of the table without spilling... more
          • We're such good spies! - Francine, Fri Jan 20 21:19
Francine liked to be optimistic. It was a better outlook for the present, an eager positivity that made any current situation feel better, and then at least if you got disappointed later, you could... more
            • Classy ones, too. - Lucien, Mon Jan 23 18:22
Francine said she liked his style. Whether she was referencing the dance position he had established for them or something more about himself specifically, he wasn’t clear, but either way it was... more
              • His confidence was delightful. Sometimes Francine worried about the people around her - if they were really happy, if they felt good about themselves - and that included Lucien, so his almost... more

He snorted at her remark of Nick being a better partner - not in a bad way, of course; it was obviously true. When he thought about it, it felt like Nick had been in dance lessons for practically as... more
                  • I think you look wonderful as is. - Francine, Tue Jan 24 00:32
Francine giggled with his returned response. Had Lucien always been this funny? If so, she was quite disappointed in herself for wasting six years not picking it up. She wasn’t entirely sure he... more

He’d ducked down to be closer for speaking purposes. Their heights weren’t too far apart, but it was loud in the room, so ducking was a practical move. Something had gone astray, clearly, because now ... more
                      • Well, a smile's the greatest accessory. - Francine, Tue Jan 24 18:04
It took a moment before he was actually kissing back, which was weird since he had started leaning in first as far as she knew, but maybe it was just the shock of being beaten to the metaphorical... more
