Ring ring!

When Remington was upset at home, her parents had different ways of comforting her. Her mom was all about distractions. Sudoku, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles. They’d sit down at the folding table in their living room and separated edge and middle pieces. Sometimes it would lead to talking about the problem. It always made her feel better. If the problem was something she felt like she couldn’t solve, it helped to have something in front of her she could easily fix. She was thankful for that.

Her dad had a totally different approach. His was all about making her laugh. He also tended to do it if Remington was annoyed or mad at him more than when she was upset or sad. This was probably because she was a generally happy teenager. She rarely needed to be cheered up because she was crying, like right now. If her dad were here, he’d totally do something dumb to make her giggle. His favorite way to do that was to turn on a Bruno Mars song, like 24K Magic or Perm, and try to dance exactly like her favorite performer.

Her dad could not sing, and he definitely couldn’t dance. It worked. Sometimes she’d even give in and dance it out with him.

Drew had an entirely different approach to her crying, and Remington had no idea how much she needed it. “No way. This is the most important place I could be.” Then, he sat next to her on the floor and put his arm around her shoulder. She hadn’t meant to just sit down on the floor, but once she got to the passageways, the Draco couldn’t move anymore. Her body just gave up and she sat down. Getting to the couches or chairs felt like it would be too much. So here she was, sitting on the filthy secret passageways floor, with Drew’s arm around her.

She gave a very watery laugh at Drew’s offer to beat someone up. If she didn’t think he might follow through because he was so damn loyal, she would have said yes right away. Instead, she sniffed and shook her head before resting against his shoulder. Her body naturally turned towards Drew, finding a comfortable way to sit in her friend’s embrace.

“I - I had a date,” she started, voice slightly muffled against Drew, “I asked Malachi on a date and he said yes. And then he - he…” She could tell that her crying was already leaving some wet spots on Drew’s shirt. She felt bad, but she couldn’t stop the crying and pulling away wasn’t something she wanted to do. “He didn’t show. I’m such an idiot.”
