Was he too shy?

Remington didn’t even try to hide how much she didn’t believe Drew. Usually when he got something wrong, Remington would just roll her eyes at him and smile a little bit and then say something like, “Okay, let’s take a look at this.” It was what made her a good study partner even though she was way smarter than Drew, because she never made him feel dumb. Drew didn’t think he was dumb, but Remington was probably the smartest person fifth year or younger (he knew that she wasn’t a fifth year yet, but he wasn’t super impressed with the current fifth years. Claudia might know a lot about dueling but she was kind of an idiot the way Dade Dakota was kind of an idiot with the paranoia) at RMI. Drew didn’t know much about the sixth years but he was sure that by the time she was a sixth year, Remington would be way smarter than any of the ones they had now.

That definitely didn’t make her feel better, apparently. “The only people who like me in that way are people who have no idea or memory of who I am, apparently.” Okay. Maybe he had to redact his opinion a little bit, because she was not acting very smart right now.

Drew had had a pretty boring experience with the forgetfulness potion or spell or whatever, except that he’d checked his bag for homework assignments and seen that his name was Andrew and thought he was called Andrew in his head until the memory loss wore off. He’d had a long and somewhat confusing conversation with Huburt, who he’d been sitting with, in which neither of them realized that they a) had ever met before and b) were roommates. They’d wound up pretty much being friends by the time they remembered everything, so overall Drew wasn’t too upset about what had happened. It was weird, sure, but that was what you got when you went to a magical school. Weird things happening during dinner.

But that day had gone waaaaay different for Remington. She’d told Drew about what happened with Hunter the day everyone lost their memories, him flirting with her and stuff. Drew didn’t know how to feel about that (was it okay of Hunter? Was it not?) but more to the point, he didn’t see why it had to mean Hunter had only done it because he didn’t know who she was. If anything, it was the opposite: it meant that even during a crisis, Hunter was still so into Remington that flirting with her was a higher priority than figuring out who he was.

Drew didn’t really want to speculate about Malachi and Hunter’s motivations (one was a jerk and getting inside the head of the other would probably be a physical hazard). He just wanted to help his friend feel better. He squeezed her in the half-hug and let her put her head on his shoulder. Even though Drew didn’t have his robes on, it felt really warm in the passageway and—um.
UM.

Okay, d e f i n i t e l y not the right time, body. Or the right context. Or the right everything. Drew loosened his arm around Remington. He didn’t want to hurt her feelings by pulling away when she obviously needed comfort, but he shifted so that his lower half was angled a different direction, because YIKES. Drew cleared his throat and tried to think appropriate thoughts that would turn into non-awkward words when they came out of his mouth. “Remington, you’re like, the smartest person at RMI, and you’re super thoughtful and uh, again, you look amazing.” Drew tried not to blush, which unfortunately didn’t work at all. “If a guy you like doesn’t like you, it’s his loss. You’ll find someone. RMI’s just a really small school.”
