He seemed hesitant. His initial response, while not even a full sentence, led to negative expectations. Francine did her best to stifle a pout, not wanting to guilt him into something he didn’t want to do. But then instead of a no, he said, “I don’t really know how to dance to this music,” and she felt her hopes beginning to soar. She smiled at him encouragingly but didn’t say anything yet, letting him work it out by himself. And he did: “Maybe we can try one song?”

“Oh my God, really?” she marveled, enthused by his willingness to try. She grinned earnestly, her slightly crooked teeth in full view. “This’ll be fun, I promise,” she added quickly, not wanting to give Lucien an opportunity to change his mind. She took his hand again, squeezing happily before pulling him - as much as the rather scrawny girl could - out to the dance area.

Dancing with Francine, like doing most things where Francine was concerned, was an interesting prospect. Despite her innocent charm, her dancefloor movements were more expected of a seventeen year old. But she did not move that way for long, remembering Lucien’s admission of no experience and realizing he might be uncomfortable. “Hey,” she smiled, taking both his hands and waving both their arms around playfully. “Fun, right? Or at least better than prefect duty?”

He’d ducked down to be closer for speaking purposes. Their heights weren’t too far apart, but it was loud in the room, so ducking was a practical move. Something had gone astray, clearly, because now ... more
