Seems like a fair trade to me

Armaan seemed to be just as welcoming of Nick’s flirting as he was of Armaan’s, which Nick appreciated. Nick definitely didn’t have feelings for Armaan - which was just as well, from what he’d heard about the younger boy’s track record over the past few years - but Armaan was attractive and honestly kind of his only option. One of the boys from his tap class, Carlos Vargas had expressed some interest in him recently, but Nick had been steadfastly ignoring that. Carlos was perfectly nice, but aside from Nick’s issues with dating dancers, Carlos was a Muggle and that just sounded like it was going to get complicated fast. Nick didn’t like complicated. From what he heard, it was unlikely that things with Armaan would get complicated, even if they did hook up. Which, in all honesty, looked like it might very well happen.

“I do insist,” the blonde boy said with a grin, taking Armaan’s hand and leading him on to the dance floor. The song that had just been playing had been a slow one, but a bubbly pop-rock song had just come on and Nick was down for dancing to that. In general, pop-anything was not really Nick’s cup of tea when it came to music, but he couldn’t deny that the high-energy beat and light lyrics were perfect for casually dancing to.

Casually dancing was weird for Nick; he honestly wasn’t sure how to do it. He’d been enrolled in dance lessons since he was four years old. Francine had taken the classes with him at the beginning, but stopped before they came to RMI. On the other hand, Nick had kept going with his lessons. Once he was a third year he started going to the studio just off Pearl Street, but even before that he’d made good use of the practical lab and the theater to keep up his strength, endurance, and muscle memory. Playing Quidditch had also helped with some of those things; Nick had first tried out for the team as a first year and had only made it to reserves, although he had managed to make it into a few games because one of the original Beaters got mono halfway through the year and had to take a break from playing. By his second year, Nick had made it on to the main team and he’d never missed a game since.

Nick considered showing off in front of Armaan. He could easily transfigure his shoes into taps - he wasn’t the best ever at Spellwork, but he did know his way around a few key charms and transfigurations that made dance easier. Nick wasn’t good enough at transfigurations that his transfigured shoes would be a replacement for taps in any sort of performance, but at a casual dance it wouldn’t hurt.

Once on the dance floor, Nick grinned at the sixth year whose hand he was holding, then broke away for a moment to jump and spin quickly in the air, landing lightly on his feet. Maybe a little bit of showing off. He took Armaan’s hand again, pulling him a little closer, then started dancing with the other boy. Even though Nick was just moving casually, his motions were noticeably precise and contained while being very energetic. There were just some things you couldn’t get rid of, not that Nick wanted to.

“So, do anything fun your first week back?” Nick asked, making conversation.

Armaan reached into the bag of chips and came away empty handed. He peered into the bag, shook it gently, and with a shrug scrunched it up and aimed it at a nearby trashcan. The bag bounced off the... more
