Classy ones, too.

Francine said she liked his style. Whether she was referencing the dance position he had established for them or something more about himself specifically, he wasn’t clear, but either way it was still satisfying to hear. It inspired a sort of mental ‘take that!’ aimed at thoughts of his siblings and fellow students. Lucien Dubois wasn’t a member of the classically popular crowd, but he had his own thing going which some people appreciated, thank you very much. Francine’s comment was an excellent confidence-booster... not that he wasn’t already confident in himself, but external validation was nice.

His mouth turned up in a smile as she took his hand. Finally, they were holding hands properly. “Absolutely. I could lead you if you had two left feet and, trust me, that’s not too bad.” His first dance partner had been Naomi, back in their pre-teen years when Gran had given them lessons to prepare for some event or other. Dance wasn’t something Lucien enjoyed at all, but he had enjoyed being better at it than his athletic-in-every-other-way sister. “But I’m sure you’ve got the right feet for it. I mean, you must have a general idea from Nick, right?”

Adjusting his hold on her waist, he took a step forward, using a little pressure to encourage her to move with him. It was already harder than he expected to recall the right pattern of motion; everything about the room was different from the last time he did something like this, and the hapless flailing of hormonal teenagers around them wasn’t helping his focus. (The irony of complaining about teenagers didn’t escape the seventeen-year-old’s attention.) “Okay, we’ll do two slow steps and then two faster ones. 1, 2, 3-4,” he recited as he moved them through the crowd. But they only managed a few repetitions before running out of space to keep going forwards, so on the next slow step, he raised his hand instead. “Now spin.”

Francine liked to be optimistic. It was a better outlook for the present, an eager positivity that made any current situation feel better, and then at least if you got disappointed later, you could... more

      • His confidence was delightful. Sometimes Francine worried about the people around her - if they were really happy, if they felt good about themselves - and that included Lucien, so his almost... more

He snorted at her remark of Nick being a better partner - not in a bad way, of course; it was obviously true. When he thought about it, it felt like Nick had been in dance lessons for practically as... more

Francine giggled with his returned response. Had Lucien always been this funny? If so, she was quite disappointed in herself for wasting six years not picking it up. She wasn’t entirely sure he... more

He’d ducked down to be closer for speaking purposes. Their heights weren’t too far apart, but it was loud in the room, so ducking was a practical move. Something had gone astray, clearly, because now ... more
              • Well, a smile's the greatest accessory. - Francine, Tue Jan 24 18:04
It took a moment before he was actually kissing back, which was weird since he had started leaning in first as far as she knew, but maybe it was just the shock of being beaten to the metaphorical... more
