Satisfaction brought the cat back

It turned out that Holland Keene had the best friends a person could ask for.

Holland, of course, had reported Lucien to Counselor/Head of House Tennant, who had apparently put the guy through diversity training or something. He’d made Lucien apologize to them twice (insincerely both times but politely the second time) and Holland had thought that would be the end of the whole mess.

They had still asked the other Lyras to confirm to the seventh-year that Holland could enter both dorms. It was the kind of minor irritation they felt was appropriate; a regular stream of people reminding him he was wrong would ping against Lucien’s psyche like acid rain. For their part, Holland had avoided interacting with Lucien, which wasn’t hard as they had very few classes in common. That was the extent of “getting back at” Lucien that Holland wanted to engage in.

Their friends had other ideas. Emmett hadn’t pushed Lucien down a flight of stairs, but he had punched him in the face (and made him cry—Emmett had stressed that part). Rose had hexed Lucien, who had no particular gift for Spellwork, and left him alone in a hallway with his legs locked together and conjured birds pecking at his head. Danny had yelled “Holland is a better man than you!” at Lucien in the Diner, and Marissa had confronted him for a conversation that hopefully made the Draco feel small and stupid. Violence and public humiliation didn’t necessarily constitute justice, but the whole situation left Holland feeling warm inside and a bit teary. They hadn’t asked their friends to do anything to Lucien, and the four of them had just—just leapt immediately to Holland’s defense.

A better person than Holland might have stepped in and ended the fifth-year war on Lucien. All Lucien had to do for Holland to ask their friends to stop messing with him was admit he’d been wrong and start using Holland’s correct pronouns. He hadn’t done either of those things, so Holland hadn’t intervened. Lucien was responsible for his actions and the consequences thereof.

They’d favored simple, masculine-ish jeans-blazer-t-shirt combinations since the incident in Astronomy, but Marissa had told them the party was “fancy dress” and that made Holland want to pull some of the more femme pieces from their wardrobe. In the end, they’d chosen a champagne halter gown with a sequined bodice and a satin high-low skirt. The dress’s cut and beaded waistline gave Holland the illusion of curves they didn’t naturally have. They’d completed the look with strappy gold heels, dark red lipstick, and eyeshadow that matched their dress. Their hair was dark brown at the roots, as always, and the longer part was charmed a shimmery golden shade.

On arriving at the party, Holland felt slightly overdressed. Marissa and some of they other students looked more casual—although EJ was wearing a tuxedo, so Holland was less out of place than they had initially thought. They accepted a green lily from Armaan at the door and tucked the flower behind their ear where they normally kept their wand. The whole blind date thing was an interesting theme for a party, and Holland was curious to see how it turned out. Hopefully Armaan and Marissa had thought through the pairings. There might be blood on the dance floor if, for example, Lucien and Emmett were paired up.

Holland’s first stop was the food table; eating gave the savvy partygoer time to get the lay of the land without looking awkward. Holland was enjoying some celery with ranch dressing from a veggie platter when they heard a “Hey, partner!” directed at them.

Holland looked up. The person who had called out to them was one of the new transfers, Ruben Lundqvist. Holland hadn’t had many chances to interact with him and hadn’t quite formed an opinion yet, but they noted he looked very punk-rock tonight. This wasn’t a departure from Ruben’s normal style, and it worked on him. “Hey, partner,” Holland returned, grinning. “This is your first Marissa Kendrick party, right? How do you like it so far?”

  • Feeling pretty satisfied - Ruben Lundqvist, Mon Mar 13 21:25
It was fortunate that Ruben enjoyed skulking through the hallways, because otherwise he might not have discovered the secret passages that lined RMI’s walls. He had been in the administrative part of ... more

      • That was a pretty cool cat - Ruben, Tue Mar 14 15:33
Fan , Holland looked incredible. His eyes had lit up upon seeing who he had been partnered with: sparkly ballgowns didn't fit his personal style interests, but that didn't mean he couldn't admire it, ... more
        • I’m more of a dog person - Holland, Tue Mar 14 23:25
The room (according to Ruben) wasn’t the only thing burning up. Holland felt their cheeks flush. The transfer made a two-handed check-you-out gesture, and the last of Holland’s self-consciousness... more

Of course Ruben noticed Holland’s blush in response to his compliment. He was a good observer to begin with, and right now he’d been studying Holland with pretty keen admiration (hah, keen , like... more
            • Luckily, I’m a people - Holland, Thu Mar 16 00:43
Holland was definitely listening to what Ruben was saying, even if they zoned out a little while he spoke. The accent was distracting. Picturing different styles of braids on him was also... more

For the unenlightened, a common misconception: dudes in chains either didn’t have a sense of humour at all or it was a strange one. Ruben was somewhere in between this and the opposite of it. He... more

Holland’s cheeks pinked slightly at the compliment, and they grinned reflexively. “Drama club, sort of.” They had been involved with the theater at RMI since their first year, and had consequently... more

Ruben was a bit of a liar, because he said he wasn’t going to do anything interesting and then he put his hand on the small of their back, which Holland found a very interesting move. Well, all... more

He'd never been to a party hosted by Marissa before, obviously, so he didn't have much to compare it to. But it was decent, he supposed. Good decorations, good enough music. A pretty energetic crowd, ... more

Ruben moved even closer, and then let go of their hands to touch Holland’s jawline, which sent a good-nervous quiver from their cheek down to their stomach. Holland was self-consciously certain their ... more
