Here's to fun!

While attempting to identify his date, Dardanius couldn’t help but notice that Marissa looked ridiculously attractive, but her blue-and-white carnation wasn’t the corresponding favor for his purple iris. Holland looked stunning in their gown, and even the more casual outfit Rose had opted to wear did strange things to Danny’s thoughts. Girls in sports bras, bathing suits and now form-fitting black dresses seemed to be wherever he went these days. How anyone ever made it through RMI with acceptable grades was starting to become a complete mystery.

The fifth year saw Camilla at about the same moment she saw him. She was already making her way over so Danny waited, and tried to drag his thoughts back to a more socially acceptable discipline. His date pointed out their matching flowers and Danny smiled, pleased with the revelation. He liked Camilla, and had gotten to know her better over the past few months; they’d started hanging out more since they had ended up talking to each other at Marissa’s first party of the year. “Camilla,” he acknowledged her, and then finally he took in details beyond the co-ordinating purple bloom pinned to her dress, such as the dress itself, and the girl in the dress. “Wow,” Danny had said before he could stop himself. “I mean ‘Hi’,” he grinned, not at all abashed by his initial comment. He cleaned up okay but Camilla just looked gorgeous. “Thank you for not wearing those boots today,” he quipped, remembering the feeling of being towered over, and being relieved to not repeat the experience. With Camilla in flats and Danny in his boots, her height gain over him was probably less than an inch, and certainly far less noticeable.

He hoped she wasn’t too disappointed not to be spending the evening with Elijah (who had also dressed smartly; Dardanius was pleased he wasn’t the only male to have opted for more formal attire), but then anyone who came to a blind date party was probably open to the concept of not choosing their date. He didn’t think EJ and Camilla were romantically involved, unless anything had changed since he last spoke with either of them, but Camilla wasn’t exactly a social butterfly and Danny knew she preferred to stick with the company of her closest friend. While Danny could understand that, he couldn’t really identify with it; he liked to be around a wide circle of friends and made efforts to turn new acquaintances into more friends whenever he was presented with the opportunity.

Okay, so he would be spending another of Marissa’s parties in the company of Camilla, and that was more than acceptable. Without conscious effort, he spontaneously recalled that she didn’t drink alcohol, so he would avoid it, too, and that she liked to dance, which was slightly more problematic because he really didn’t like to dance, but he supposed he couldn’t keep showing up at parties and not dancing forever. To the forefront of his mind, however, sprang the knowledge that Camilla had turned her wand on Lucien in the Diner, as well as her yogurt. Danny had, unfortunately, not been there to witness the incident, but he doubted there were very many students in the upper years (and probably the lower years, too) who hadn’t heard about it, one way or another. He was definitely going to have to bring it up at some point - if only to get a more accurate version of the story than some of the far-fetched rumours he’d heard - but perhaps right at the start of the evening wasn’t the best timing in the world.

A bit of swaying, a bit of stepping, some limited turning around, and Danny supposed it would have been difficult to really mess up his very basic approach to dancing. So even though he knew Camilla... more
