I’m more of a dog person

The room (according to Ruben) wasn’t the only thing burning up. Holland felt their cheeks flush. The transfer made a two-handed check-you-out gesture, and the last of Holland’s self-consciousness about their outfit evaporated. More people in formal attire had arrived; Sorsha had chosen a stunning red gown, Camilla’s embroidered dress had a sleek sophistication to it, Emmett was quite dapper in his suit and gold bowtie, and Danny’s stylish gray and green dress robes were a great look on him. Holland felt much less out of place than they had moments before, even though the classmate they were talking to looked like he was about to ditch the party for a concert with a mosh pit.

“Thank you,” said Holland, smiling. “You look good too. I like your hair.” Ruben’s hair was braided, with his flower twined into the plait. Holland kept their own hair too short to wear fancy braids, but they enjoyed braiding hair. They could absolutely picture Ruben rocking a waterfall braid. It was a shame that Marissa—the only person at RMI whose hair Holland tried to do outside of plays—had such resilient curls. Braiding was completely out of the question, no matter how good she would look with a half-up crown.

Not that Marissa didn’t look gorgeous all the time anyway. The Aquila seemed slightly more stressed by hosting tonight than she had at previous parties. Holland chalked that up to their friend’s party planning partner for this evening; Armaan was fun, but not the most reliable person, and Holland would’ve bet ten Galleons the two had clashed while setting this party up.

Still, the event was turning out well so far. Hopefully Marissa would be able to relax and enjoy the evening. She was now talking to Russell, who as usual gave off the aesthetic vibe of a wizard trying to pass among Muggles for the first time. (Dad liked to remind Holland that Mom, who was raised in a completely wizarding community, had been wearing platform shoes, ripped jeans, a floral blouse, and a safari vest at a Muggle mall the first time they met.) Most of the individual pieces of Russell’s outfit were fine—although he should lose the sandals—but the colors conflicted horribly. It wasn’t the fourth-year’s fault, as he couldn’t tell which colors looked good together. Holland didn’t seek out people as fashion projects (Danny and Emmett dressing better was a natural byproduct of friendship with Holland), but they’d be undeniably interested in helping Russell dress in a more coordinated way if he wanted. Which he probably wouldn’t because he was a teenage boy, but still.

I did not think they would be used for much other than walking and... well.

Holland laughed. “They’re definitely used for that too. Basically anything that you don’t want interrupted, the passages are a good place.” Holland didn’t spend much time in the passageways; they were single and had a single, so there wasn’t a need for another private location.

Ruben’s question was more interesting. As far as they knew, there weren’t any passageways that connected RMI to the outside world. Normally, students arrived and departed via Portkey, and visitors took the elevator from Pearl Street to enter the school. The staff had fireplaces connected to the Floo Network, but Apparition was not possible within the school grounds. Out of their close friends, Marissa probably knew the passageways best, and she had never mentioned a secret route to Boulder. Emergency exits had apparently not concerned the architect who designed RMI. It made Holland feel suddenly claustrophobic.

“Well, the passages go up and down and connect all different levels of the school,” there was a route that connected the theater to just outside the kitchens that Holland regularly used, “so one could go up as high as the street. But I don’t think you can leave the school through the passageways, if that’s what you were wondering. Why, trying to break out?” they teased.

Ruben moved even closer, and then let go of their hands to touch Holland’s jawline, which sent a good-nervous quiver from their cheek down to their stomach. Holland was self-consciously certain their ... more
