We can be excited together!

“Oh, right,” she giggled again at the reminder that she hadn’t actually greeted him. “Good evening to you too!” Connor was always kind of formal, whereas Marley was super not formal, as proved now when she had forgotten to even say hi properly. Which made her wonder sometimes if that made it weird that they were friends (because of course they were friends; the only people she wasn’t friend with were the ones she hadn’t met yet). Not wonder in like, a bad way, like she was worried about it, because there was nothing to worry about - it was great when different types of people became friends! That was how she got to learn so many new things.

Marley nodded brightly to his question, her curls bouncing. “Oh yes, it’s really nice! I’ve never been to a party like this before. In my family,” she explained to him, “sometimes we have parties but those are, like, usually more serious, I guess? Not actually serious, because my dad will get a little-” She mimed staggering, waving her arms sluggishly beside her. Drinking was a Serious Thing, but it was also a Not Serious Thing, obviously, because adults only ever drank a lot when they were with friends. It wasn’t like her dad got funny like that when he had work parties, or so she assumed, at least. “But still kind of serious,” she continued, “like my mum actually cooks, which never happens, and everyone will sit down to eat together, and then we play board games after. So this is a completely different type of party compared to that, don’t you think?”

She paused, more for the sake of breathing than actually expecting an answer, although in that moment she got distracted by seeing one of the older girls in a pretty green dress and made her breathing-pause extra long to admire it, so there was definitely an opening for him to jump in if he had any reaction. Because it was a really pretty dress, and it needed the right amount of time to be admired properly. The right amount of time meant for the dress’s size: this green dress was only about knee-length, so she didn’t have to look at it quite as long as Holland’s long dress needed to be looked at, but the girl had funky boots and leggings and - was that a pineapple? Oh, wow!

“Look over there! Is her backpack a pineapple?” she exclaimed to Connor, not actually pointing with her hand (because Mum said that was rude) but kinda pointing with her head (because she had to point with something). Maybe it wouldn’t seem quite as important to him as it did to her, boys didn’t often wear fun-shaped backpacks, but he could take her word for it, it was important. “I don’t know that I would ever wear a pineapple backpack, because pineapples aren’t native to where I come from - I mean I don’t exactly live in the same place I was born,” same to assume she had already told him that story at some point, but she mentioned it again just in case he had forgotten the key details about her life, “but still, it would feel like advertising something that wasn’t really me, you know? It’s cool, but I’d rather have...” She thought about it for a moment. “Hm, I think pumpkins are native to my part of America. But I don’t know that pumpkins would make sense for a backpack, since everyone thinks they’re related to Hallowe’en and it might be weird to have a pumpkin backpack all year. What do you think?” Turning eager brown eyes onto Connor, she waited curiously for his opinion.

“Well, yeah,” Marley returned, not picking up on his patronizing tone. “But that’s proof, isn’t it? A lot of Muggle food and wizard food aren’t very different at all, since they have the same food... more
                          • I wouldn't call any of this 'helping' - Connor, Mon Apr 10 04:45
Apparently he had offended Marley by explaining the nature of the world to her, which was somehow unsurprising. In Connor’s experience (largely at RMI), people who weren’t purebloods could get awful... more
