Stick with me and you'll change your mind

“Mandrake!” Marley echoed. “That’s not really a fruit, is it? Well, I guess pumpkin isn’t a fruit, either. Or is it? I don’t actually know. Anyways,” she rounded off hastily, having noticed that Connor’s attention seemed to be wandering, “mandrake is still an awesome idea. Thanks.” It would be pretty funny to have a mandrake-shaped backpack. Probably you’d only be able to wear it at RMI, however, because the Muggles would be confused. Even her dad, who knew about the magical world, would be confused by a mandrake! She flashed Connor a genuinely appreciative smile for his suggestion, although she wasn’t really sure if he saw. Well, hopefully he did. He didn’t seem to smile very often, at least not that she had seen, but that was alright because she smiled enough to make up for it.

It had never made sense to Marley, how some people were extra-smiley and others didn’t smile hardly at all. But in some ways, she supposed that it was better for people to smile very rarely than for them to smile without really meaning it. Because that was sad. Why would anyone waste time smiling in a fake way when they could instead go off and do something fun and then smile for real? She didn’t know very many people who fell into that category, which was a good thing since she wouldn’t know what to do with them anyways. Most of the people in Marley’s life, both at RMI and at her two homes, were easy smilers, maybe not as frequent as her but still easy, and you could tell that they meant it because their eyes got kinda squishy in the corners.

Connor mentioned going to the food table, and then something about his sister being there. She didn’t really understand what he meant by that - was he going to meet his sister? Ooh, were they gonna double-date for the night? That would be fun! “Okay!” she nodded agreeably, skipping alongside him. “There’s like, so much food. When I walked past, a lot of it actually looked kinda healthy, too, which was surprising because, I mean, this is a party, right? But I guess it’s good to have options. So what are you gonna get to eat?” Marley had a lot of opinions about food (Marley had a lot of opinions about everything) and they were all positive (they always were). Actually, that was a lie - she was extremely anti-mushrooms. Mushrooms were the most disgusting things ever. She had tried them cold in sandwiches, and they were disgusting and chewy; she had tried them cooked on pizza, and they were disgusting and rubbery; she had even tried them with noodles, and they were disgusting and slimy. Hopefully there weren’t any mushrooms on the food table. She didn’t even like eating other foods that touched mushrooms. Disgusting mushroom germs, ewww.

Apparently he had offended Marley by explaining the nature of the world to her, which was somehow unsurprising. In Connor’s experience (largely at RMI), people who weren’t purebloods could get awful... more
