My Three Favorite Words!

Teal was a growing girl. Her birthday was coming up soon, so she only had a few months left of not being a teenager. She was five foot and two and a half inches (up half an inch from the start of term!), and annoyingly, growing in other places too. And to fuel all that growing, Teal was hungry all the time. There were enough breaks between classes that she didn’t have to bring snacks (most of the time!) but there were some days she could not stop eating. So the all-day breakfast, organized by Professor Boot, was perfect.

The Draco had the perfect set of pajamas to wear, too. Mom and Dad had gotten her Nice PJs before she came to RMI last year, since she’d have to wear them around other students. Before that, she slept in Mom’s old potion-stained shirts or hand-me-downs from her cousins. Teal didn’t really care one way or the other, as long as they were comfy, but she enjoyed picking out new clothes. That morning, she changed from her iguana pajamas to her food pajamas: soft pants with red, pink, orange, and purple squiggly lines across them, and a big orange shirt that said “Need S’More Sleep” with a picture of s’mores. And, of course, she had her iguana feet slippers. Teal was pretty sure they were supposed to be dinosaur feet, but they were blue-green and scaly with little claws, so they were actually Godzilla slippers. They clashed horribly with the pajamas (which already clashed with themselves), but Teal firmly believed that the more colors in something, the better.

Her roommate Annie wanted to sleep in (apparently the lure of pancakes was not as strong to the German girl), so Teal bounced happily down to the Diner by herself. She was surprised to see Professor Boot in the diner himself, although we was wearing the same set of robes he always did. School opinion was split on him being a very solid ghost or just several hundred years old. Teal couldn’t imagine him in pajamas, or sleeping, for that matter. He seemed to have the same amount of energy and craziness no matter the time of day or year. Did he only eat pancakes? He was the pancake-eating champion, but Teal hadn’t been there. Maybe it was all a rumor to cover up him being a ghost!

She dodged a floating pancake and stopped, awe-stricken, as she took in the Diner. There were so many options: Pancakes, waffles, crepes, bacon, sausage, eggs six different ways, and at least eight different types of fruit. A spread of colorful spreads caught her eye, and the rows of warm bagels next to the bowls caught her nose. Teal couldn’t decide if she wanted to drink apple juice, orange juice, mango juice, pineapple juice, pumpkin juice, or dragonfruit juice, or if she wanted milk, chocolate milk, hot chocolate, or one of the dozen different types of tea. She wanted one of EVERYTHING. The house-elves had outdone themselves. It was heaven.

After several agonizing minutes deciding (and dodging breakfast goods), Teal got herself a glass of bright pink dragonfruit juice. It probably won’t turn her into a dragon, but Teal was willing to take that risk. Circling the diner, she realized she wouldn’t have enough hands to hold all the plates she wanted. She could levitate them, of course, but she didn’t want to risk Shifty Eyes stealing them. Teal placed the glass of juice on a table, put a Sticking Charm on it to deter the poltergeist, and grabbed two plates.

The first plate was for sweet things: two chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes with sliced strawberries on top, maple-glazed bacon, and scrambled eggs. The second plate was for the heartier, not-sweet things: yellow cornmeal pancakes stuffed with cheddar cheese and green onions, sizzling sausage patties, and all topped with a giant fried egg. Carefully holding her treasures, the second-year made her way back to her table to find someone else already sitting there.

“Oh, hi!” Teal couldn’t wave, but she smiled brightly. “Look at all this FOOD! Isn’t this amazing? I’m so happy right now.” She stabbed the fried egg, cut off a piece of the cornmeal pancake, and took a huge bite.

For the record, Samuel Boot had not volunteered to be involved with this event. Samuel Boot just wanted to eat his pancakes by himself, in peace, the way it should be. The way it had always been. But ... more

      • No that's really okay - Connor Farnon, Thu Apr 13 19:48
The concept of all-day breakfast was entirely unappealing to Connor. It sounded like a messy affair that had the entire school there, and he was very selective about his company so the idea of the... more
        • But you'll miss out! - Marley, Fri Apr 14 03:06

          • I'm somehow okay with that - Connor, Fri Apr 14 20:20
This was all going terribly and when Marley asked him if he trusted her, Connor couldn’t even make a sound of dissent. Of course he didn’t trust her. He wouldn’t trust her with Dade’s puffskein, and... more

                      • I refuse - Connor, Wed Apr 19 11:16
Marley sighed at him and Connor scowled right back at her. It wasn’t his fault that she thought touching food with her hands was acceptable. He had manners and knew better. Admittedly it wasn’t... more
                        • That's not allowed - Marley, Wed Apr 19 22:41

                          • But consider: what if it was - Connor, Thu Apr 20 04:42
In the midst of his coughing, the last thing Connor had expected was for Marley to come up and whack him on the back, which was of course precisely why she did so. He was too busy coughing to glare,... more
