Feeling Flat as a Pancake

Getting out of bed seemed more of an effort that morning than usual, so it was definitely lucky that wearing pyjamas to breakfast was not only welcomed, but encouraged on that particular day. It didn’t really make that much difference because Danny wasn’t actually going to go to breakfast in clothes he had slept in, neither was he planning on wearing sky blue silk pyjamas to a room where there would inevitably be consumable projectiles of some description or another. Still, the promise of pancakes was a good incentive. So the fifth year showered like any other morning, only instead of selecting from his usual daytime attire, he pulled on a pair of red plaid flannel pyjama pants and the only plain white t-shirt he owned, before slipping his feet back into the comfy leather moccasin-style shoes he usually reserved for his dormitory and commons. He left his chestnut brown hair damp from the shower, because if he was wearing pyjamas to the Diner, surely nobody would take exception to his hair being a little moist. One less job to do, he considered, as he dropped his wand into the purpose-made pocket along his right thigh and traipsed to the Diner.

On arrival, Danny was reminded by the presence of other people that he wasn’t feeling very social. It was an exceptionally rare turn of events that he desired solitude, and this was not one of those occasions; he just didn’t feel as high-spirited as usual, and that often made conversations more of a chore than he was used to. The aroma of breakfast was nevertheless enticing, and within a few short minutes Danny was seated at one of the smaller tables with a small cup of sweet, black coffee and a waffle topped with caramelized apples and whipped cream. He was rarely so self-indulgent but he was feeling sorry for himself so food choices were subject to deviation.

What had happened last week, anyway? Camilla had said some stuff in the cafe on Pearl Street that caused Danny to casually reassess his entire belief system. He knew the social hierarchies and patriarchal inheritance traditions of his sphere of existence were archaic, but he’d always believed they had their place in wizarding culture. He wasn’t sure about that anymore, and he was even less sure where that left him. It was apparently very difficult to be objective about something that governed him so absolutely. Yet it did highlight some character flaws that he was keen to address without delay. The most glaring of these was that he had willingly allowed himself to be persuaded that an activity that he’d previously considered intimate and important could be undertaken with no attachment or meaning. Specifically, he had been kissing both Marissa and Camilla without any commitment to either, and he decided he didn’t want to be that guy, actually.

In Camilla’s case, he felt like he was every part the pureblood elitist she had spoken against, kissing a girl whose circumstances made it very unlikely he would consider any kind of respectable relationship with her. It was repulsive, and even though he and Camilla had never held any expectations to each other beyond friendship, Danny had not been comfortable in reaping any further benefits from their arrangement. He’d told her that he didn’t want to be the sort of person who had liaisons without attachments. It had been the truth, if not the whole of it, and she had accepted it. So that was over.

Marissa had posed a different conundrum, because she had said it was supposed to mean nothing. Danny had tried, but he couldn’t deny that kissing Marissa did mean something to him. He cared about her, and he realised that he cared far more about what she did - specifically who she was with - that he probably should for two people who were just friends. Each time they were together it just reaffirmed that he did not have the ability to separate an intimate action from an emotional reaction when Marissa was involved. Last night he’d ended that, too, and Marissa had seemed confused - maybe a little disappointed? He wasn’t sure - by his decision but she, too, had agreed and accepted it.

This morning Danny sipped his sweet coffee and ate his indulgent waffle, and tried not to contemplate the extreme prejudism of his ancestors until after breakfast.
