I'm somehow okay with that

This was all going terribly and when Marley asked him if he trusted her, Connor couldn’t even make a sound of dissent. Of course he didn’t trust her. He wouldn’t trust her with Dade’s puffskein, and it had been dead for almost six years. He wouldn’t trust Marley with the care and keeping of a mothball. Or a rock. Or - well there were a lot of things Connor wouldn’t trust Marley with because the list could be summarized as everything in the whole universe. Except Cheese Whiz. Marley could take her Cheese Whiz and have it all to herself and maybe they would combust and go out in an orange, goopy fire and then Connor wouldn’t have to deal with either of them.

But as his hazel eyes continued to stare, horrified, at the jar, Connor realized that there was no way that was actually going to happen and instead he made a kind of pathetic, gulping sound that was a nonverbal somewhere between a ‘yes’ and a ‘help me’. She had giggled. It probably wasn’t intended to be maniacal, but that was how Connor took it.

The boy shook brown bangs out of his eyes. Cheese Whiz was a part of his life now? Could it not be? Could he give it back? He had never in his thirteen years of life thought that he could be intimidated by someone in his year who clearly looked as though she didn’t belong at wizarding school, with her - well, her appearance and her hair. But intimidated he was. Throughout all of this, on top of everything, he was still afraid to come across as rude. If Connor was the sort of person to curse at things he would be cursing his polite demeanor and manners. Since he wasn’t - due to aforementioned manners - he instead gripped the sleeves of his robes (still a little too big, he hadn’t hit the promised growth spurt yet). He could get through this. It couldn’t be that bad.

Then the top of the jar popped off and a smell of - oh Merlin what was that smell? Connor scooted back as it reached his nostrils. It smelled like cheese, but wrong somehow. It smelled like the only time he’d ever blown something up in Potions class, kind of metallic and kind of cheesy but absolutely wrong. After that Connor had taken to paying much more attention in Potions in the hopes of never smelling anything like that ever again. Apparently he could have skipped a year and a half of avidly studying, since Muggles apparently bottled the stuff and sold it to unsuspecting customers. His skepticism rose another level and he eyed the jar in Marley’s hands. Was she sure it wouldn’t turn someone the color of lime jell-o? That was what the potion had been supposed to do.

“Um,” Connor said weakly, nose scrunched up trying to avoid the smell. “How does one um. Normally? Eat Cheese Whiz?”

Hadn’t she told him that already? “You can put it on something, or eat it plain,” Marley repeated, confused by his confusion. It wasn’t that complicated. Just like she’d explained to him at the... more

In the midst of his coughing, the last thing Connor had expected was for Marley to come up and whack him on the back, which was of course precisely why she did so. He was too busy coughing to glare,... more

Connor kept coughing for a bit, even after he took some sips of the orange juice. Was that a bad sign? Had her whack been unlucky enough to actually put him in a worse spot? Concerned, Marley kept... more
