But consider: what if it was

In the midst of his coughing, the last thing Connor had expected was for Marley to come up and whack him on the back, which was of course precisely why she did so. He was too busy coughing to glare, but it hurt! He would probably have a bruise there now. Connor bruised pretty easily, and the other second-year had hit him pretty hard. Presumably Marley had thought she was being helpful. Connor was rapidly realizing that Marley spent a lot of the time thinking she was being helpful when she was actually wreaking total and complete havoc. He had considered pointing this out to the girl, but wasn’t entirely sure how much good it would do. Connor assumed that Marley didn’t understand how rude she was all the time, but also didn’t know that she had any alternate way of behaving. He somehow doubted that she did.

Fortunately, after hitting him on the back, Marley did something actually useful and got him a drink, which Connor took gratefully, still coughing. He took a sip and forced it down his throat, grimaced, and took another sip. Slowly the coughing subsided until he felt safe putting the cup down. With one lingering cough into his elbow, Connor cleared his throat, then rubbed his temples. This was such a Situation.

“Was it supposed to figuratively kill me, then?” he asked grumpily, referring to Marley’s earlier comment about the Cheese Whiz and his death. This entire time Connor had been operating under the assumption that Marley was stupid rather than specifically malicious when it came to forcing him to eat liquid-Philadelphia-goop, but maybe he had been wrong. Admittedly, Connor wasn’t entirely sure that Marley was intelligent enough to be malicious about that sort of thing, but with her comment about him dying he couldn’t be quite sure. He glanced at the mess of a pancake still sitting on his plate, fortunately still separate from his other food. Maybe he could convince Marley to let him eat the rest of his breakfast instead of trying the Cheese Whiz and celery and raisins that she had been so excited about earlier. He doubted it, but it was worth a shot. Oh -

“I’m sorry, this was your juice,” Connor said. “Would you like me to get you another?”

Connor insisted that he wasn't scared, which Marley hadn't really expected because he was generally such an honest person. Maybe not an open person. He was really quiet, and when people were really... more

      • Nope. I'm putting my foot down. - Marley, Fri Apr 21 00:08
Connor kept coughing for a bit, even after he took some sips of the orange juice. Was that a bad sign? Had her whack been unlucky enough to actually put him in a worse spot? Concerned, Marley kept... more
