For once this year (between the Lucien thing and dating Ruben) the gossip mill wasn’t exclusively grinding news about Holland. The whole situation with Elijah Carthy—who had apparently assaulted Lucien back in February because of the Camilla’s yogurt debacle—had taken over most of the school’s rumor capacity. EJ had apparently lost Pearl Street access, and he’d been stripped of the Prefect title. There were rumors that he was going to lose the Quidditch captaincy too, which Holland thought was unwarranted. Of course you should lose some privileges if you beat someone up, but Elijah had worked hard for years for that position and was usually a calm and reasonable person, especially when compared with most of the other students around his age.

Although if Jessica took over, Lyra’s Quidditch odds against Cetus might be better. Not that it mattered all that much with Frankie graduating, but it was nice to win for purposes of House pride, even if they weren’t building anyone’s resume.

Holland was on their way to a dinner date when Heather Bartel appeared beside them with an about-to-grind-the-gossip-mill expression. Heather’s hair was still springtime green, although the fashionista would probably re-dye it to her usual summer blonde in the next few weeks. The weather was certainly approaching summertime; Holland was comfortable in white crochet shorts and a burgundy blouse; the top had long sleeves, but with cutouts so their shoulders were exposed. Black mid-calf boots, dark lipstick, and star-shaped gold glitter around their eyes completed the look.

The underclasswoman informed Holland that they would never believe what she was about to tell them, and without giving Holland time to respond launched into a story that Holland would actually believe. Heather’s gossip was typically seventy to eighty percent accurate—she either got details wrong accidentally, or sensationalized for a more ludicrous story—but she could usually be counted on to get the most critical information correct. Moreso than weathermen and certain biased news outlets.

Camilla had done what? And Ruben had done what? Holland knew their significant other had transferred in from Durmstrang (which, if you could believe the stories about that school’s relationship with the Dark Arts, was a violent place), and yes, they knew he practiced glíma (martial arts with staffs, which was a violent pastime compared to most other hobbies). And yes, Holland knew Ruben wasn’t the kind of person who would back down from a confrontation. But knowing those things was different in the context of him beating two people badly enough to leave bruises.

Heather could have gotten something wrong given her track record, although core details were typically her strong suit. Still, Holland gave Ruben a quick kiss when he arrived, albeit with less interest than they usually did. Not that Holland usually went for public displays of affection (bar kissing on a crowded dancefloor), but as with most sexuality-related situations, they preferred privacy. “Fan, it is great to see you. I am in so much need of hair-help, you would not believe it.

“Yeah, Heather mentioned,” Holland replied, without reaching for their wand to cast a hair regrowth spell. They frowned and shrugged his arm off their shoulders. The gold bangles on their right wrist clinked together. “What’s this I heard about you beating up Lucien and Camilla? Is that true?”

  • I need your help! [Holland] - Ruben Lundqvist, Thu Jun 1 23:57
Ruben wasn’t always in a great mood, but he was generally in a good one. That trend might have continued yesterday if he hadn’t been interrupted in his pursuit for justice. But, nope, he’d been both... more

      • Then let me clear things up for you - Ruben, Sat Jun 3 00:00
In terms of dating (and likely many other areas), Ruben was a more physical type than Holland. That had taken some getting used to: making out in the halls wasn’t exactly hens preferred style of... more
        • That might help - Holland, Sat Jun 3 11:51
Here was what Heather had said: Ruben and Camilla both got in trouble for hitting each other in Dueling Club, and also Camilla had made Ruben’s hair fall out. Danny had told Holland about the... more
          • Holland’s announcement that hen had questions came as no surprise, of course, and he made a sort of go ahead gesture, crossing a nod with a slight hand-wave. The way that Holland approached hens set... more
            • Not quite - Holland, Sat Jun 3 16:36
Holland was only marginally annoyed that Ruben started by answering the question they wanted the answer to the least. The mild annoyance didn’t stop Holland’s brain from taking off with the... more
              • Why not? - Ruben, Sat Jun 3 18:59
The next words out of Holland’s mouth did not acknowledge his lack of hair in the slightest. Ruben made a disappointed noise in the back of his throat and raised his glass. Yet again, his hair wasn’t ... more
                • I’m definitely not feeling helpful now - Holland, Sat Jun 3 23:44
Either Ruben was being deliberately obtuse, or he genuinely didn’t understand why Holland would have a problem with him attacking Lucien and Camilla. Holland wasn’t thrilled with either of those... more
                  • Maybe you're taking on too much - Ruben, Sun Jun 4 18:18
Considering the more interesting extremes of his previous fighting experience (a satisfying mix of pre-arranged sparring with randomly provoked brawls), Ruben would be hard-pressed to classify what... more
                    • Maybe you’re talking too much - Holland, Sun Jun 4 21:34
To his credit, Ruben sounded like he meant it when he said he would never hurt them. Holland really wanted to believe that. It was true that until the last two days, they’d never remotely thought... more
                      • If only you'd let me talk more - Ruben, Mon Jun 5 00:23
Holland’s I like you too didn’t give him the satisfaction it should have. Largely because it sounded like an automatic response, something hen had said just as a way to shut him up before launching... more
                        • Your actions spoke for themselves - Holland, Mon Jun 5 21:57
Apparently, Ruben’s biggest priority right now was to object that it was not easy for him to get into fights with people. As a person, Holland was primed to spot discrepancies, and Ruben had... more
                          • I do prefer actions over words - Ruben, Wed Jun 14 12:01
It didn't resolve any of his confusion about the unnecessary debate they'd wound up in, but Holland's confirmation that they could at least talk about it later was somewhat reassuring. Ruben would... more
