Here was what Heather had said: Ruben and Camilla both got in trouble for hitting each other in Dueling Club, and also Camilla had made Ruben’s hair fall out. Danny had told Holland about the duel-turned-brawl as well, so that part of the story was corroborated by an eyewitness. Heather had also said that Camilla told Counselor Tennant that Ruben and possibly also Rose had attacked her and beaten her up in a hallway because of Camilla and Marissa’s tiff last week. Ruben had pled guilty to that. Then Lucien had reported EJ wasn’t the only one who’d beaten him up in February, and Ruben had helped with it.

Here is what Ruben was saying: Rose had been the one who punched Camilla, and Ruben had taken credit so that Rose didn’t get in trouble. The part about Lucien was true.

“I have questions,” Holland said, which was a constant state for a conspiracy theorist. “Why did you help EJ? Did he ask you to, or did you have a negative interaction with Lucien before that or something?” Holland could believe that—Lucien Dubois was hardly known in fifth year circles for agreeableness and pleasant interactions—but something seemed off with that idea. According to the grapevine, EJ (and Ruben) had beaten up Lucien a few days after Holland and Lucien had argued in Astronomy, back in February, meaning it had happened when Ruben had been at RMI for under two months. Not that Lucien couldn’t turn a stranger against him in that timeframe, but at the very least, Ruben probably would’ve mentioned before if he’d personally clashed with Lucien. He wasn’t one to keep quiet when he was unhappy with someone or something.

Holland was trained to think critically. They could completely believe that Rose would beat up Camilla for Marissa—Rose would rob a bank or take a shot off a grassy knoll for Marissa—and they could believe that Rose wouldn’t want to get detention or lose her Prefectship. Ruben and Rose were close, and Ruben clearly didn’t care about breaking school rules or getting in trouble; it made sense that he would take the blame.

But… “Why did Camilla accuse you of being involved if it was just Rose?” Holland could understand Ruben taking the blame for the fight, but according to Heather, Camilla had singled him out as her assailant right off the bat. All they wanted was reasonable explanations that meant their boyfriend didn’t randomly beat the crap out of people. “Also what spell did Camilla use on your hair? I can fix it if I know.”
