I’m definitely not feeling helpful now

Either Ruben was being deliberately obtuse, or he genuinely didn’t understand why Holland would have a problem with him attacking Lucien and Camilla. Holland wasn’t thrilled with either of those options. From his perplexed expression, the second seemed more likely. Holland wasn’t sure if that was worse or better.

“Yeah, I know they’ve both done very bad things.” A few days ago, Marissa had told Holland that Camilla slapped and basically slut-shamed her. Marissa seemed more upset by the comment than the slap, which Holland could understand. Unless Marissa wanted to hook up with her, it was none of Camilla’s business who Marissa kissed. Marissa was also worried Rose would ignore what Marissa had told her she wanted and try to get revenge on Camilla anyway. Worried with good reason, apparently. And there was obviously no love lost between Holland and Lucien. Holland had avoided working with the seventh-year since February, with some success. On principle, they’d also avoided discussing Lucien with Francine, since Holland knew they were still harboring some animosity toward the Draco. The continued dislike was probably mutual, so avoidance was in everyone’s best interest.

“And obviously people are gonna react. But it’s not okay to violently attack people you’re mad at. That’s also a very bad thing,” Holland continued, more than a bit irritated. Not just irritated; their chest was tightening in an anxious-upset way. “You beat up someone you barely knew just because you saw someone else doing it, and you premeditated an ambush on someone else. How do you not get that that’s messed up?”

Danny had expressed concern that Holland might not be safe with Ruben, and Emmett thought the Aquila was “too hardcore,” which Holland took as a euphemism for intimidating. Holland had written it off as the boys being protective of them, which their Housemates were wont to do, but now Holland was starting to agree with Danny’s point that Ruben could be scary. Holland hadn’t seen his duel with Rose, but it had apparently been weirdly intense.

Holland studied Ruben warily. “Like, what, if we had a falling out, would you beat me up too?” They curled one manicured hand into a loose fist, their gold-varnished nails barely digging into their palm. Holland had the sudden feeling that they’d be more comfortable holding their wand, but they didn’t reach for it.

  • Why not? - Ruben, Sat Jun 3 18:59
The next words out of Holland’s mouth did not acknowledge his lack of hair in the slightest. Ruben made a disappointed noise in the back of his throat and raised his glass. Yet again, his hair wasn’t ... more

      • Maybe you're taking on too much - Ruben, Sun Jun 4 18:18
Considering the more interesting extremes of his previous fighting experience (a satisfying mix of pre-arranged sparring with randomly provoked brawls), Ruben would be hard-pressed to classify what... more
        • Maybe you’re talking too much - Holland, Sun Jun 4 21:34
To his credit, Ruben sounded like he meant it when he said he would never hurt them. Holland really wanted to believe that. It was true that until the last two days, they’d never remotely thought... more
          • If only you'd let me talk more - Ruben, Mon Jun 5 00:23
Holland’s I like you too didn’t give him the satisfaction it should have. Largely because it sounded like an automatic response, something hen had said just as a way to shut him up before launching... more
            • Your actions spoke for themselves - Holland, Mon Jun 5 21:57
Apparently, Ruben’s biggest priority right now was to object that it was not easy for him to get into fights with people. As a person, Holland was primed to spot discrepancies, and Ruben had... more
              • I do prefer actions over words - Ruben, Wed Jun 14 12:01
It didn't resolve any of his confusion about the unnecessary debate they'd wound up in, but Holland's confirmation that they could at least talk about it later was somewhat reassuring. Ruben would... more
