Maybe you're taking on too much

Considering the more interesting extremes of his previous fighting experience (a satisfying mix of pre-arranged sparring with randomly provoked brawls), Ruben would be hard-pressed to classify what he’d done at RMI as violent. He’d just kicked Lucien a few times, and then watched Rose land weak-but-improved fists on Camilla. Child’s play, really. Both events were incredibly tame by his standards. But Holland’s current tone of voice was starting to give him the sense that now wasn’t the best time to point out the discrepancy in their definitions of ‘violence’.

He also hadn’t been particularly mad at either of the older students. His opinion of Lucien was a strictly moral judgement after hearing all the whispers (or shouts) around RMI about the guy; hard to grow up mostly raised by a sister who was a capital-f Feminist in every direction and not have strong beliefs of his own about decent behaviour. That general dissatisfaction was really why he’d jumped in with EJ… Well, technically, the boredom of not having anyone to smack around in a while was why he’d first gotten involved, but it was the knowledge of what type of dumbom the Frenchie was that had kept him happily going. Camilla, on the other hand, he’d been angry with, but his interest in punishing idiots who were cruel to members of his social circle had been pretty well-balanced with his more casual interest to see Rose in action.

This was also probably not the best contribution he could make to their chat now, though. His suspicions were confirmed by Holland’s next words and the cautious way hen was looking at him.

“Vad fan, never, of course not!” The words burst out of him and he straightened up, scooting to the edge of the chair in his eagerness to… to what? Make Holland understand? Or change hens mind? They were quickly entering territory Ruben had absolutely no experience in. Not that he would ever admit that he didn’t know how to proceed. Obviously. But right now, the only part that he was certain about (aside from his bafflement at how they had wound up on opposite sides of something that shouldn’t have been a debate in the first place) was that Holland looked like hen was scared of him or something, and that was unsettling, and the fact that it unsettled him was also unsettling.

“You are a person that I very much like,” Ruben told hen honestly, quieter than his initial eruption. “And always, if something happened, there would be another way to, to fix it. But people you do not know anyways?” He shook his head a little, fingers fidgeting along his leather bracelet. The answer was so straightforward, Ruben ordinarily wouldn’t think it was a question even worth answering himself. Yet now that he was getting this example of why Holland was different from girls people (admittedly all girls) in his past… This whole thing might just be another downside of being a transfer student. Hen hadn’t known him growing up. “Direct is the most easy for solving problems. We have grown up in different ways,” he offered in an attempt to placate hen, “so this is maybe why it seems violent or weird-- I mean, wrong, to you.”

  • I’m definitely not feeling helpful now - Holland, Sat Jun 3 23:44
Either Ruben was being deliberately obtuse, or he genuinely didn’t understand why Holland would have a problem with him attacking Lucien and Camilla. Holland wasn’t thrilled with either of those... more

      • Maybe you’re talking too much - Holland, Sun Jun 4 21:34
To his credit, Ruben sounded like he meant it when he said he would never hurt them. Holland really wanted to believe that. It was true that until the last two days, they’d never remotely thought... more
        • If only you'd let me talk more - Ruben, Mon Jun 5 00:23
Holland’s I like you too didn’t give him the satisfaction it should have. Largely because it sounded like an automatic response, something hen had said just as a way to shut him up before launching... more
          • Your actions spoke for themselves - Holland, Mon Jun 5 21:57
Apparently, Ruben’s biggest priority right now was to object that it was not easy for him to get into fights with people. As a person, Holland was primed to spot discrepancies, and Ruben had... more
            • I do prefer actions over words - Ruben, Wed Jun 14 12:01
It didn't resolve any of his confusion about the unnecessary debate they'd wound up in, but Holland's confirmation that they could at least talk about it later was somewhat reassuring. Ruben would... more
