Professor Samuel Boot
Prospective Students Day (Open to all incoming new students)
Sat Jun 17, 2017 17:36

There were several topics in which Samuel Boot had strong opinions. These were only the most important topics, such as the proper preparation of pancakes (the American style of thick pancakes had gotten disappointingly thicker than those he remembered from his extremely distant youth), or whether Irvik the Ignorant's fourteen-month stakeout in the garden of a neighbouring goblin family could be classified as an act of war (it was during the third Goblin Uprising of the seventeenth century, and Irvik had carried a sharp pitchfork, but the answer was not that obvious. It never was).

The topic of new students did not fall under this category. Fortunately, new students were not today's focus. Unfortunately, today was all about prospective new students, which was a demographic Samuel Boot paid even less attention to - an impressive feat, considering it usually took him several terms to acknowledge his students at all and by then they were no longer defined as "new".

Somehow, his catching of several winks at the last staff meeting had been interpreted as Samuel volunteering to interact with the aforementioned prospective new students. He was unsure how that had happened. The bones woman had started ranting about student misbehaviour, which had supposedly been a problem this year, not that Samuel had noticed or cared. Then he had blinked and found out that the theatre man had not only explained the upcoming event, but also assigned roles.

Samuel thought that in his plentiful years at RMI, he had held more than his fair share of responsibility over the children. And yet here he was, still expected to herd them around, like he was doing now.

Prospective Students Day had started with the theatre man, also known as school counsellor Garen Tennant, greeting the prospective new students and their parents with some kind of generic welcome speech. Both men had then led the whole group on a tour of the RMI grounds - or more accurately, Garen had led the tour and provided informative information, while Samuel shuffled along at the rear and occassionally told the nearest children a definitely true story about the haunted owlry that definitely did not include matter-of-fact details about the ghost's gorey death.

The tour ended. Garen had taken the parents aside for what Samuel assumed to be a lecture about even more informative information. It was now Samuel's job to entertain the children. He was relieved to see that the big Diner table was already set with milk and cookies, because this meant the children could entertain themselves with snacks. (There was also cheese and fruit, but Samuel assumed the children would prefer the cookies.) (There was also tea, but apparently children weren't supposed to have caffeine, but obviously Samuel wouldn't stop them.)

Patting his beard absently, Samuel stared at the children a moment. The best way to avoid interacting with them was by making them interact with each other. "Find someone who has the same colour socks as you," he instructed, making it up along the way, "and then go sit together. Have a snack." Samuel pointed at the big round table in the middle of the room, just in case it wasn't obvious, because sometimes he forgot it was there, too. "Talk to each other about the school tour, and what you liked about it." Children were sneaky with loopholes, so he added, "If you hated the tour, talk about what you would rather be doing."

Samuel waited for the children to split off into pairs before sitting down at the table himself. The History professor selected a cookie and waited for Garen to come back with their parents to relieve him of this un-asked-for responsibility.

OOC (Out of Character) note: Hello and welcome! All new & returning authors who are considering submitting first-year students for the new term can post their students here. If you're unsure how to get your student interacting with another character, consider mentioning their sock colour in your post so that another author can easily respond. Any author-specific questions can be posted on the RMI OOC Board; any character-specific questions, just write "Tag: Samuel Boot" in the subject line of your post, and he will respond pronto. Happy writing!!
