A shy start

"Gå med dem! Över med dig, Anselm."

It took some more encouragement, but the blonde boy finally (reluctantly) left his pappa's side to trail after the other kids. Anssi had been watching the other kids a little throughout the school tour, but he hadn't really interacted with any of them yet, since he was walking with his pappa and Pappa had had different quiet comments that he shared in-between Mister Garen explaining the different rooms they were walking past. He liked small conversations like that.

Originally, Mamma was also going to come, but her office had called her in again for extra work. That had been a little disappointing; it was weird getting ready in the morning and knowing that Mamma wasn't going to be there with him. But this, Anssi knew, was the reason why he and Pappa had been able to have such a thoughtful whispered discussion in one hallways about whether the nodding portrait of a friendly-looking senior lady had gotten to choose the background that she had been painted into. Mamma would've been more curious to know about how the artist had been chosen and if they were paid more for painting a moving pet bird behind the moving lady. Those were also interesting questions, but Anssi's mamma was loud enough that he was pretty sure he never would've heard Pappa's ideas if his mamma had been talking about hers with them, too.

The Professor, on the other hand, seemed even more quiet than Pappa. He had spoken a bit, kind of weird things, but it didn't really leave enough space for a conversation afterwards. Right now, the Professor (Anssi hadn't heard his name very well the first time and of course he wasn't going to ask him for another introduction because it would just look like he hadn't paid attention to the first!) was being super quiet. He'd told them to partner up by socks and then talk to each other. Anssi had thought that Professors were supposed to lead kids, which this Professor wasn't doing, not properly, but maybe it was different in America. He'd have to ask Ruben about it later, once Ruben was allowed to come see him... which possibly wasn't until summer.

His socks today were mostly dark blue with a greenish spot around the toes, although that wasn't visible since he was of course wearing shoes. Anssi blinked around the kids again, picked out one who looked like they might also be quieter like him, and then walked towards them. "Hey," the Finno-Swede ventured hesitantly, his thick accent wrapping around the single word. "Wear you socks that have blue or green? My toes have green," he explained. Anssi was wearing shorts today, and assumed the other kid would be confused when they saw his blue socks poking out of his sneakers with no obvious sign of green.

          • Unsuspecting of what? - Drew, Tue Jun 20 14:57
The other boy apparently got his own name wrong on the first try, so that was… something. Sam, though. Drew had been expecting a less American name. Well, zero points for making assumptions, he... more
