Just showing you up

Rose’s outfit-related query was delivered in a way that indicated her acceptance of his invitation might depend on Danny’s answer, which would have caused him some concern if she hadn’t actually already sort of, kind of agreed to it, anyway. Admittedly that was before she knew about the whole being-his-date reason for her visit, but he was relatively certain she was just messing with him. People liked to do that to Danny; he was noticing a trend. “Doesn’t matter,” he replied, just as seriously. “Your choice.” He was on the verge of adding, ‘if you agree to this you can wear pyjamas for all I care,’ but he suspected she might just be nuts enough to take that seriously. While it would be funny in about ten years once he’d gotten over it, the fifth year suspected that it would, in fact, take that long to get over Rose showing up as his purported fiancée, to his coming of age party, dressed in pyjamas. “I will be wearing robes,” he added, finally looking away and continuing to eat his breakfast as if her final response didn’t matter to him either way.

Which was complete nonsense, because now he had concocted the plan, it was essential that Rose agreed. It was practically foolproof - Rose was actually from the sort of family that, if anyone bothered to look into the Farnons (and most wouldn’t), would hold up to scrutiny; nobody would question the validity of their betrothal. Plus she was, despite being small, inarguably capable of holding her own against pushy debutantes; it was the only way that injuring Camilla recently, and Ruben less recently, in duelling club, actually worked in her favor. Not that Danny was envisioning any scenario that would require Rose to engage in physical combat with any (or all) of his potential suitors… but if it did happen then he would bet on Rose each and every time. Also he would have a good time with Rose. He knew she found him irritating sometimes, and he was a little terrified of her when she did that yelling thing that happened occasionally, but they could probably manage to get through two weeks more than usual in each others’ company.

Furthermore, regardless of whether she would be wearing dresses, or robes, or even pyjamas, Rose would look the part. She was hot, and spending two or three evenings in her close company was going to afford Danny a pleasing view, if nothing else.
