Unsuspecting of what?

The other boy apparently got his own name wrong on the first try, so that was… something. Sam, though. Drew had been expecting a less American name. Well, zero points for making assumptions, he guessed.

He shook Sam’s hand. It was a more formal gesture than Drew thought was called for, but whatever, not super weird. Drew was just more of a high five or fist bump kind of person. Kit was a hugger, to the surprise of exactly no one who had ever met her. Drew was honestly surprised that she hadn’t dramatically attacked slightly-less-terrified-now boy with a hug yet. He’d bet a few Galleons on her hugging her conversation partner by the end of the mixer, though.

Sam’s stomach growled before he could answer Drew’s question, and his answer was such an obvious understatement compared to the stomach rumbling that it made Drew laugh. “Yeah, same,” he said as they walked over to the food. “I guess there’s probably someone who wore flip-flops or something else without socks. But I don’t think Professor Boot really cares either way if we do the icebreaker or not.” He was sitting down eating a cookie apparently ignoring them, and he hadn’t stopped crazy-socks Kit from talking to white-socks boy, although good luck to anyone trying to get Kit not to do anything. Marissa had maybe a smidge of control over her sister (which was more than Drew had over Madeleine) but Kit just sort of Did Things. It was what made her so fun to be friends with. You really couldn’t be bored when you were friends with Kit.

Drew got a plate and loaded it with two cookies, a couple different types of cheese (he definitely recognized cheddar, and there were a few yellow-y ones he didn’t know what they were called), and a small bunch of grapes. He wasn’t really interested any of the other fruits that were being offered, but he liked grapes.

Finished with his selections, Drew escaped left the food table to find a seat at an empty table nearby, assuming Sam would find him when he’d gotten all the snacks he wanted. There weren’t too many students around, so it’d be really hard for Sam to get lost, he thought. Drew had taken a big bite of his first cookie (chocolate with peanut butter chips) when Sam got to their table. “So what did you like about the tour?” he asked, after he’d chewed enough to not spray crumbs everywhere. It was a super boring question, but Sam’s answer would probably be more interesting than his.
