‘I have a last name’ was not really the kind of fun fact Drew had been going for, but Sam wasn’t crying so he decided to let it slide. Drew was not much of a tea-drinker but, he thought, he’d be willing to try magic tea if it was a lot different from Muggle teas. Maybe there were cool wizarding teas that made you breathe fire or turned your hair crazy colors or something. That would be a tea worth drinking.

Then Sam said it was cool that he was adopted, which Drew personally thought didn’t make sense. Being adopted wasn’t cooler than being raised by your biological parents, it just… was a thing that was true about Drew’s life. It came up sometimes because he didn’t look like the rest of his family (Madeleine looked a little like Dad but a girl and she had the same color eyes as Aaron and Jessie) and when they were out places strangers sometimes thought that was some of their business when it was actually none of their business. But other than that, being adopted wasn’t something Drew thought about a lot.

Jessie working with Serengeti Miniature Dragons was cool, though. Drew and Madeleine had visited South Africa a couple of times with Jessie because she wanted to show off her dragons. Or maybe she wanted to show them off to her dragons. Drew hadn’t been clear on that and a lot of the time it was better to just not ask with Jessie. She was the most fun person he knew but she was also a little scarily excited about her dragons.

‘I used to live in South Africa’ or ‘my uncle is on the lam for doing something illegal with snakes’ were exactly the kind of fun facts that Drew had been hoping to get, but Sam bounced to another question before Drew had a chance to ask for more information about either of those things.

“No, we’re not brother and sister, she’s my cousin,” he paused, “kind of. My dad kind of adopted her mom so I’m technically her uncle, I guess. But that’s weird ‘cause we’re the same age, so we just say cousin. And yeah she’s my best friend.” Everyone was kind of Kit’s best friend, but Kit was Drew’s only best friend. They were both extroverted but she really liked to pick up strays. Drew liked being around people a lot but they didn’t need to go out of their way to make new friends. People would just gravitate toward their group.

Drew mentally reviewed his next question and decided it probably wouldn’t stress Sam out too much. He decided not to even address how Sam was splashing milk on the table because he really didn’t want the other boy to cry. “So okay, you’ve lived in India and South Africa. That’s really cool. Where’s your favorite place you’ve lived?”
