Holland Keene always did an exciting new hair color for the opening feast, and the start of their sixth year at RMI was no exception. This year they were sporting a navy-to-silver ombre look that started at the roots of their long-on-top hair. The silver tips of their hair shimmered with a non-toxic silver glitter—one of the new products for Bryony Keene’s shop. Today was Holland’s first test run to see if the mother-child team had accomplished their goal of creating a glitter that didn’t get everywhere. Their hair impeccably matched their sequined long blue top and constellation-patterned blue leggings. Black and grey Oxfords, silver glittery nail polish, and a watch with the white leather wristband completed the look.

They’d come back to RMI early to be an Orientation mentor. They liked being around for the new students and explaining things to them, and this year there was a transfer who was genderfluid and Holland had been assigned to mentor him, presumably by design since they were the only person who had experience being nonbinary at RMI. It sounded like Maverick’s previous schools had been bad at diversity and queer stuff. Holland had been happy to tell him about the staff and student responses to the situation with Lucien last year.

They had left out the part about Elijah and Ruben, because it was only marginally relevant and also Holland didn’t really want to talk about it. The sixteen-year-old was still moderately annoyed at Ruben. That didn’t stop Holland from glancing over at the Aquila bonfire while they were waiting for DH Nanda to begin her speech.

Scanning the crop of first years at the front of the room, Holland was delighted to see Marissa’s sister holding a Lyra-green dreamcatcher. Holland cheered a little extra loudly as seafoam green confetti rained down on the Lyras and Kit came over to the bonfire.

It was nice of Boot to warn them that there would be a quiz on the first day. In the past he hadn’t warned them—the students had come to expect things like this from Boot. On the first day of class during their fourth year, Boot had lectured the intermediate students for skipping class the week before. Holland suspected the professor had either 1) forgotten that RMI’s term didn’t start until September 1st, the way it always had, 2) had his memory intentionally, accidentally, or maliciously modified, 3) become stuck in an unstable time loop, or 4) not noticed the date at all. These options were all equally likely.

The first house elf that came by was holding a tray of cupcakes, so Holland took one. There was no reason that certain foods needed to be eaten at certain times; it all ended up in the same place, so it was just the restaurant industry saying salads had to come first because they were the fastest to prepare. Holland ripped the bottom half of their cupcake apart and put it on the top to make an icing sandwich, which was the easiest way to eat a cupcake. They had just taken a bite (and somehow gotten a dot of white frosting on their nose) when they noticed someone staring. “If you want dessert for dinner too, no one is stopping you,” Holland said, grinning cheerfully
