Rose’s blonde hair was still damp from swimming when she came down to the Diner. She did her best to swim every morning - it was part of her Quidditch conditioning - but hadn’t been feeling particularly up to dealing with her hair today. Before she had gone swimming Rose had suspected a mild cold coming on; she had woken up with a slightly sore throat and a little bit of congestion. After her practice as she was changing from her damp suit and sweats to that day’s outfit, Rose had decided she was definitely getting sick. The swim had worsened her congestion and her throat was now definitely sore. The sixth year wasn’t particularly thrilled with the idea of being sick. It wasn’t that Rose let things like getting sick get in her way, but her usual breakneck pace of activities and schoolwork was more difficult when she was sneezing all over the place. Perhaps it was time to see Medic Rocamboli after breakfast.

Olive green culottes and a light gray hoodie paired with black Converse, all chosen for comfort rather than fashion, reflected Rose’s sluggish mood as she headed down to the Diner, slower than her usual pace. She hoped that a Pepper-Up Potion could eliminate her budding cold before it became an issue - they had an essay due for Charms the next day, and Rose had her one-on-one Animagus lesson with Professor McKindy later that day. Today they were going to talk about whether or not she wanted to do the month-long ritual that would give her an idea as to what her Animagus form was. Rose was still unsure, because it sounded very involved for something that wasn’t strictly necessary to the process. Plus, she kind of fancied the idea of having her Animagus form be a surprise. It was her goal to be able to transform before the end of the year, and Professor McKindy said it was very likely that she would be able to accomplish that.

Yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit was Rose’s breakfast of choice for days like this, and she seated herself at a table that had small serving bowls of each already on them. She spooned the plain yogurt into a bowl, then added the granola and a selection of berries, mixing it together before bringing a bite to her mouth. The yogurt felt cool against her sore throat as she swallowed.

“Alright, what’s occurring,” came the strongly accented voice above her and Rose’s hazel eyes flicked up in surprise. She didn’t know the voice, and her once-over of the girl who was speaking assured her that the speaker was someone she had definitely never seen before. Her fair eyebrows rose, part in surprise and part in skepticism. They had already had a few weeks of classes, and this girl had definitely not been in any of hers. Nor had Rose seen her around the school.

“Breakfast,” Rose replied, gesturing at the seat in front of her with an empty spoon. “Where’d you come from?” Her tone was both joking and inquisitive - she had no real interest in offending the random stranger who had interrupted her breakfast, but did want to know what the deal was. Was she another transfer? They had already had so many transfers in the last two terms already; Rose was beginning to wonder if people were just fleeing en masse from other magical schools.

The Diner that looked like being inside a train was a nice touch, Myfanwy thought as she looked at the room for the first time. Arriving at the start of the third week of term instead of the first... more

So the new girl had come from California (was there a wizarding school there?) and before that Wales, specifically two towns with far too many consonants for Rose’s liking. To be fair, ‘Welsh town... more
