What, never never ever?

The girl replied in an English accent which was completely lovely because although it might have been nice to be the only foreign student at the school, Myfanwy hadn't really been expecting that because it was supposed to be an International school after all. “I came from California this morning,” she answered the question maybe a bit more literally than in had been intended, “and before that from Wales, about halfway between Ystrad Meurig and Pontrhydfendigaid. You're not from America either,” she said, speaking quickly and cheerfully. “Did your family move here as well?” Myfanwy guessed so because she knew definitely there was a school in England because she had thought about maybe going there herself but really eleven was too young really to move away from home and besides they didn't teach any proper Muggle lessons at these magic schools.

The other girl was eating breakfast, and even though she'd had some fruit already that morning it felt like a long time ago and it would be even longer until lunch so Myfanwy thought it might be best to try eating some food. Not yoghurt, though, because she'd been vegan for the past year, excepting for when she knew the products hadn't come from animals farmed just for that purpose - she ate the eggs her own chickens had laid, obviously, but Mrs Jones had all the chickens now on her farm - and vegetarian the whole rest of her life. There was some toast on the table but Myfanwy didn't know where that had come from, either.

“Is any of the food here organic?” she asked the other girl, absently spinning the green stud in her lobe around between her thumb and forefinger. “I don't support the use of pesticides and I never buy GM produce so I like to know where my food comes from before I eat it.” It suddenly occurred to her that there might be a spell a witch or wizard could use to protect crops instead of pesticides, and eating that would probably be okay, but if it was a potion then it would have to be vegan or she wouldn't eat that, either. Also even if the bread was made fresh at the school, and maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, the ingredients might come from Muggle suppliers and that just circled right back around to the start, didn't it? She was hungry though.

“I'm Myfanwy, by the way,” she said, because she didn't know the other girl’s name, and she thought she might as well offer her own name. It was a bit rude to ask someone else's name without offering your own, wasn't it? “Myfanwy Owen. You can call me Myffi if you like. What can I call you?”
