The undiscovered parts might be better

“That’s a lot of horses,” Myffi understated. She couldn’t even imagine how big this ranch was, but forty horses was a lot of horses, especially for ones with wings, because, well, they were bigger. And could presumably fly away if they wanted to. “Do they ever try to fly away?” she asked as the thought occurred to her. “Do you like, have to clip their wings or something?” That didn’t sound especially humane but she couldn’t pretend like she knew the first thing about keeping winged horses. They had never had to worry about chickens escaping because they had high fences and even the jumpier birds couldn’t get up there.

Nolan said he had his own horse too - or horses, it was difficult from his phrasing to know whether he had just one or more - and that was really interesting, too. Like why would you have your own horse and also a whole ranch of them? His family must really like horses, Myffi guessed. “Tell me about your own horses,” she said brightly. “Do you keep them like a pet?” She was genuinely curious; some student here had owls that they considered to be pets, but some just thought of them as a method of communication. Myffi wasn't sure how she felt about that, or about working animals in general. Most societies argued that their working animals enjoyed the work they did, and it kept them active, so if that were true she couldn't denounce it, but keeping an owl solely to deliver letters seemed unfair to the owl.

At his invitation, Myffi gladly called to mind all the knowledge she had gathered so far on the topic of Pearl Street. “It's great, actually,” she began. “There's loads of shops and cafes, and a cinema, and dance studios and things.” She hadn't had a huge amount of time to explore as she'd only been there a few months herself and she had spent most of her time on Pearl Street at work. “I work at an organic food store,” she told Nolan. “It's super great because they give me a lot of food for free if, you know, it's starting to go off or whatever, and I have some money to buy anything else I want. Some of the other students have jobs, too, at other places,” she elaborated in case Nolan was interested in doing that, too. “I can show you around, if you like, and you can help me explore the places I haven't been to yet.” Rose had shown Myffi around not long after she had arrived, so it would be fun to be able to pass the favour along.

Myffi was relieved to discovered that winged horses didn't need their wings clipped to stay in a ranch. She'd never considered boundary charms, but then she'd never had a reason to. You had to be... more
