Satveer Mittal
Older, Wiser, Golden

Summer had passed as something of a blur. Previous years were full of adventures and Satveer could recant many a tale of his family on the road. The nights under the starts. The new and exciting people he’d met. Visiting different counties and continents, living each day as it came. This summer however, was in his own words “fuzzy”. Apart from the week in India visiting his mother’s family, most of the summer was spent helping his father with his new, thriving, business or getting to know the new town. His new town. This was the first summer that Satveer would have a permanent home address.

Satveer’s town was, as far as he understood it, a typical American town. It was big enough to have its own high school but not its own (American) Football team. It had a main street with shops, restaurants and a little market that sold fresh produce, but no shopping centre. So far, everyone seemed nice, and it helped that they quizzed Satveer on his ‘special boarding school for gifted children’ in front of his siblings. Satveer was the only child in his family with the magical touch and he loved it (almost as much as his father)!

India was as awesome as ever, more so, as it almost didn’t happen. Some sort of confusion with the international port key request. There were some missing stamps or something though the detail was well over Satveer’s head. He was just glad he had gotten to go. He’d missed his mother’s family he wanted to tell them all about school and show off his honed carpeting skills! The trip was made all the better having celebrated his 12th birthday visiting the Taj Mahal.

Sat next to the fire with both a smile and a feeling of belonging, Satveer wistfully thought over the weeks that had led to that moment. He had adored his summer, but he loved being back at school.

As the new head teacher started the introductions, Satveer glanced around the room, hovering his gaze over at the new kids as their dream catchers defined their houses. He watched as some students walked nervously towards the fire. Recalling how daunting it was, the eyes of everyone watching you walk towards your house, Satveer looked at Toby in the hopes that the feast was about to begin. He hadn’t eaten all day in preparation for it. Much to Satveer’s disappointment, Toby continued with further introductions of the prefects and head students as Satveer’s stomach grumbled in protest.

No sooner had Satveer quipped “Man I’m hungry…” to the person next to him, Headmaster Morgan spoke “With that, let the feast begin!” Satveer began fidgeting with enough excitement to activate the charm on his shoes, causing the soles to glow a golden yellow.
