There was nothing good nor pleasant left in Claudia’s scope of experience at Rocky Mountain International, and yet here she was again. She had a best friend who was pretending to be gay and hadn’t realized that Claudia was not speaking to her because of it, she had an ex-not-really-boyfriend-but-a-boy-who’d-been-her-particular-friend who'd turned out to be racist, and the sort of person who would shout insults at a younger student across a common room before engaging in a physical brawl, and she’d had to endure an unbearable amount of time this summer in the company of Marissa Would-Date-Anyone Kendrick because her brother was an unmitigated moron. Luckily that particular nonsense appeared to be over and done with (although why they couldn’t have reached that conclusion at the start of the summer, instead of submitting Claudia to endless torture and only figuring out their blindingly obvious incompatibilities in the last few days, was quite beyond her), so hopefully Marley and Connor would have likewise regained some semblance of common decency, otherwise this was going to be an exceptionally lonely year for Claudia.

In preparation for everything being as dreadful as the new fourth year imagined it might, Claudia had spent the last couple of weeks researching other places of magical education - her friends and peers from outside the confines of her school attended private academies or were educated by tutors, and her cousins currently fequented schools in Paris - Claudia would have to improve her French a little, but that was on her agenda, anyway - so there were options available to her besides RMI. Dardanius would be graduating at the end of the year, and while her mother had been educated there, Claudia felt no loyalty to the school. Darlene had promise as a friend, but they wouldn’t be taking any classes together this year, and the Lemont girls were okay, she supposed, but Claudia missed Marley.

Over the summer, as usual on school breaks, Marley had written to Claudia. The blonde hadn’t found the enthusiasm to open them, however, concerned they might contain details about her date with Teal that Claudia simply could not bear reading. She had kept them all, and they lay concealed in her trunk beneath her school textbooks (which of course she had finished reading in preparation for the classes ahead).

She also missed Connor, more than she was willing to admit. They had always gotten along so well, and Claudia did prefer his company to that of just about anyone she knew. Then without really expecting to, she had enjoyed their brief experiments with physical contact. He had never kissed her, but she would have let him. Now all that was ruined, too.

Regardless of the low probability of success, Claudia was determined to attempt to make something good out of this experience. The bolder cuts and more confident colors of her outfit selections before the summer had seen her though the break, and Claudia believed she looked magnificent in her cream dress with black detail, and matching ankle boots. Vivid blue eyeliner and a large floral clip placed at the back of her head matched perfectly the Cetus blue flames as Claudia strode with her shoulders back and her chin up to find a seat at the bonfire. From the outside she was certain she looked every part as beautiful and powerful as she felt miserable and insignificant.

              • Leon smiled, “Drew… got it!” It seemed like he got away with the change of subject. Drew didn’t seem to press questioning which was good. He didn’t want to have to lie to the friendly older boy. “So... more

“Yeah, of course they are. House elves like doing work,” Drew said. Muggleborns didn’t really get how house elves worked, which was fair. Most house elves wouldn’t take money or anything even if you... more

“It’s not that weird,” Drew said, shrugging. His dad was the Head of Lyra, plus the counselor and the director. And his aunt (sort-of aunt—out of all his aunts, Cindra was the least close to being... more

Leon started to ask a question and Drew mentally braced himself for whatever inappropriate question he was about to be asked by the first year. Honestly why couldn’t people just mind their own... more
                          • Like the loony bin? - Leon, Tue Feb 6 12:07
Leon turned slightly to Drew, “It’s just that… I don’t know… I think I’m in too deep or something. Like, you know how things work and have a normal magical family. Meanwhile, I just have an... more
