Marley Chapman
Oh happy day!
Sun Jan 14, 2018 18:11

“Marley, come here!”

“Yeah, I’m only gonna be a minu--”

“Your owl got out again! Come here now.”

“Ohmygod!” Lipgloss half-applied, Marley stuffed the pink tube into the pocket of her denim vest and raced out of the bathroom. Unfortunately she’d forgotten that her suitcase was still in the hall outside. Fortunately her legs were faster than her brain, and though it was an ungraceful jump, it was still a jump and she made it into the combined kitchen-living space of the trailer unscathed. The first thing she saw was her mum, the short woman holding an empty birdcage in one hand and gesturing wildly with the other as she swore under her breath in Italian. The second thing she saw - well, it would’ve been her new owl, except whump fuzzy wings hit her on the side of the head and all she saw for a moment were stars.

Ooooh. Stars. She was also wearing stars today, a floaty skirt with a galaxy pattern that she’d found cheap on Kijiji. And she was also gonna be looking at real stars soon, because she’d signed up to take Astronomy as one of her electives. Because now she was a fourth-year! Officially one of the Older Kids in school! This year would be so awesome. If she ever made it to RMI, that is.

Marley shook her head vigorously so that the stars would fizzle out and scowled at the small brown-and-white owl, who was currently taking advantage of the high ceiling in the enchanted trailer, circling the skylight above. “Mister Sprockets, we gotta go soon! Are you coming with me or not?” It took longer than it should’ve (Mum still keeping up a background track of muttered cusswords) but finally the owl came down and landed on Marley’s outstretched arm. Mister Sprockets stared at her with his huge yellow eyes and made a sad chirpy noise. The dark-skinned girl sighed loudly at him. “I’m sorry but you have to stay in the cage. I don’t want to lose you in the portkey!”

“Marley, quick!”

She had just enough time to dump the young owl in his cage and get a kiss from Mum before feeling that familiar-but-still-yucky jolt deep in her stomach. Fingers wrapped tightly around the handles of both suitcase and birdcage, Marley stumbled a bit on arrival to the Diner, but didn’t fall. Thank goodness. Already she saw there were some new faces among the older kids - her class, now - and it would’ve been embarrassing to fall in front of them! Leaving her suitcase in the hall, she almost left her owl, too, but there was such a sadder chirp behind her that she just had to bring him along and set the cage down beside her at the Lyra bonfire. “You’re staying in the cage, okay? We can’t disturb the Feast with you flying around!”

The new headmaster seemed really happy, which made Marley happy too because that was always a good sign when your teachers were happy to welcome you back (yeah, she knew the headmaster wasn’t technically a teacher but he was sorta in the same group as teachers on account of having authority and stuff). But it made her even happier when the food started coming around. She had put so much effort into packing and then making her new (secondhand) denim vest pretty with a couple new (actually new) patches and a frog button, she’d forgotten to eat dinner at home before coming! But then she turned left to take a crab cake from a passing house-elf (she’d eaten crab cakes for the first time ever this summer, and she’d been mad at first because she hadn’t realized it was actually meat and she was trying to avoid meat but actually it tasted really good and she wanted to trust that the elves were nice to the crabs when they were cooking them because it was like REALLY good) and she realized Holland was sitting there beside her, and that was even more happy.

“Hi Holland!” she greeted them enthusiastically, not paying attention as she set down the crab cake right on top of a slice of vegetarian lasagna. “So you’re head student now, huh? That’s so neat! Oooh can I have one of those, too?” This latter sentence was aimed at an elf on Holland’s other side. It looked like something colourful on that elf’s platter, though she couldn’t actually see what it was yet. But colour usually meant healthy, and hopefully it wasn’t meat.
