The weirdest thing that had happened over the summer was that Drew had gotten an apology letter from Connor Farnon. Specifically, it was an apology for using the words Connor had used. At least that was what Drew figured out once he got through all the awkwardness and the extra words Connor had used to say something that didn’t need that many words. Drew wasn’t sure what to make of the letter. Eventually he decided that it had to be genuine, because if Professor Blair-West had made Connor write a letter then he would have had to send it before term ended, and he hadn’t. So that was interesting.

Drew also wasn’t sure whether or not to tell Dad and Aaron about the letter. The thing had kind of blown over after term ended. Actually if Drew was being honest, it hadn’t been a big deal for him to start with. After the fight and after Connor had left the room, Aaron hugged Drew and took him to get ice cream. This was definitely not what was supposed to happen to people who started punching other people in the Common Room, but in Drew’s defense Connor had been being a racist, homophobic jerk, so he had deserved it. Also Aaron had offered to teach him magical self-defense, to which Drew had said a big old yes. (They weren’t telling Dad about that.) Drew had done his suspension with Rob, who made him help with potions ingredient prep (which was easier without Kit licking everything like in class) while telling Drew it was good that he’d punched Connor. During the suspension Rob had also made jokes and told stories about pranks he had pulled, and Drew got the impression he was going out of his way to be, like, really specific about how he’d done each step of all the pranks. Drew had already known pretty much everyone at RMI was on his side before his “punishment” but like, wow.

When Drew saw him at the feast, he made eye contact with Connor around the Cetus bonfire and nodded once, as if to say that they were not totally cool but that Drew had gotten the letter and he accepted the apology. As much as you could say that with a nod and a serious expression.

Drew wasn’t really someone who held grudges but Connor had been pretty terrible. It made Drew really angry to think about what if Connor or someone said stuff like that to Madeleine. Connor was a fourth year now so he would still be at RMI when Madeleine came, plus Mads sometimes talked to the students now anyway. Today she had decided to stay at the staff bonfire, it looked like, but she often spent the opening feasts talking to other kids. Normally Drew wasn’t concerned about people picking on Madeleine because everyone at RMI had always been really nice to him, but now he wasn’t sure. No one was allowed to pick on Madeleine, except for Drew, which didn’t count because he was her brother.

The new Headmaster had apparently worked with Dad ages and ages ago, so the Tennant-McKindys had had Toby over to catch up a few times this summer. Drew was used to his bouncy attitude by now but it was kind of funny to see that in front of the rest of the school Toby was exactly the same as he was when he was just hanging out.

Drew snagged a chicken empanada from a passing house-elf and took a bite. Oh Circe, Merlin, and Agrippa, it was not a chicken empanada, it was steak and it had peppers and much hotter spices than Drew was expecting. He swallowed the bite anyway and then waved over a house elf who had milk because his mouth felt like he was breathing fire into it like one of Aunt Jessie’s dragons, except that his fire was even hotter and would probably not be lilac. Drew had to drink almost the whole glass of milk before his mouth felt better.

Okay so Drew would not be having empanadas today. But there was still a lot of empanada left and he didn’t want the food to go to waste. Last year, the Lyra who ran the AgriClub had had a whole thing about how much food was wasted, and Drew didn’t want to be part of the problem. Hmm. The second-year used a knife to cut off the part he had bitten from and then nudged the student next to him. “Hey, do you want this?” He offered the plate to the other Cetus. “I thought it was gonna be chicken and cheese, but it’s actually steak and peppers and it’s too spicy for me. I cut off the part that I bit so it’s all okay, no germs or anything.”
