I don't HAVE to

Honestly, Leo was always so grumpy, it was almost worth having a billiwig or two around just to sting a bit of cheer into him. If the ethics of casting a cheering charm on someone who didn’t want to be cheered weren’t so fuzzy, Myfanwy would seriously have considered it. Instead she would just have to be extra cheerful and hope her mood mood rubbed off on him.

“Bonilla wasn’t that bad,” she said, reaching into her over-the-shoulder khaki canvas bag and pulling out a biodegradable cardboard tub of organic cauliflower curry. The previous headmaster hadn’t appreciated her questions about where the RMI food came from, or her suggestions about switching to more planet friendly providers, and he really hadn’t taken kindly to her educational breakfast pamphlets, despite the fact that she was obviously trying to impart important knowledge, but he had allowed her to set up AgriClub and to swap potions for Healing (which was only necessary because Rob kept trying to fail her when she didn’t want to make non-vegan potions) so on balance she had found him acceptable. She had high hopes that Toby was going to be more open to sustainable food - she had spent some time over summer drawing up a list of local farmers who could provide free range eggs to the school, and she was definitely going to ask him about it very soon. “I’m super excited about Toby though. He seems so jolly!”

“I’m also excited about AgriClub, we’re going to try some more crops this year, and I’m going out as soon as I can to see what’s still fresh enough to harvest from the summer,” the sixth year enthused. “And I’ve heard that Miranda Bradby’s child has started at RMI,” she squeaked with a conspirational whisper, because that was also super exciting, but maybe the first year didn’t want everyone to know who they were just yet. Myffi had looked at the new students but she couldn’t immediately identify any of them as being the spawn of one of her idols.

Myffi started to eat the vegan, planet-friendly meal she had brought with her, and she looked at Leo more critically. “You didn’t wear glasses before,” she commented. She’d had to think about it because they didn’t take all the same classes together and sometimes people only wore them for reading or things anyway, not like Myffi, who wore her round, rose-gold spectacles all the times to be able to see clearly. “Have you switched from contacts? I tried wearing them once, but they’re super uncomfortable, plus they are so bad for the environment.” She didn’t approve of anything disposable, and the lens solution could sometimes contain chemicals that were harmless themselves, but caused harmful waste in their production and distribution.

She didn’t say anything about his food choice, because she had already made her stance on meat products well known. She liked to share information, but she wasn’t going to tell people what choices to make or how to live their own lives. If Leo was happy ingesting mechanically ground up cow then good for him.

Just because Leo was grumpy all the time, it didn’t mean that other people couldn’t be happy all the time. Myffi could easily believe that Toby was, in fact, that happy. She could believe it more... more

“Do all these meals have to be super vegan, or is it cool to bring a bit of fish along once in a while?” Leo asked. Myffi paused to consider. They’d only had one meal before, and there hadn’t been... more

It wasn’t very often that Leo was the cause of someone’s smile, normally he was much more effective at causing people to scowl at him. In fact when Leo had first come to RMI he’d often got into... more
