We're not even in the same book

Kit was touching her.

Katherine Kendrick was touching her right now. Claudia was forced to wonder what wrong turns she had taken in her life that had brought her to this point. They weren’t even in the same House, so this disaster child putting her accident-prone hands onto Claudia’s couture dress was a completely unanticipated and avoidable scenario. Merlin damn Dardanius, he really knew how to make a mess of things for himself and everyone around him.

Marissa being different from Connor was obvious, in several different and quite important ways, but had no bearing or relevance on the conversation. Unless - oh, but of course Kit was comparing Danny’s relationship with Marissa to Claudia’s arrangement with Connor. There was absolutely nothing similar about them, and she would very much thank Kit to mind her own business except that she was too incensed to utter coherent words.

Of course Kit would defend her sister to Claudia, but there really was no need: now that she no longer had the audacity to be in a relationship with her brother, Claudia was prepared to continue tolerating Marissa as much as she ever had done. She didn’t argue that Marissa was friendly and sociable with a talent for bringing people together and making them feel included, and if Kit wanted to quantify that as ‘great’ then Claudia wouldn’t disabuse her, but that was completely irrelevant. Especially as Kit had made the comparison with Connor, who apparently was ‘not great’ if one followed that logic (which one should perhaps not, because Kendricks didn’t adhere to logic like a normal, rational person). Connor had some flaws, and had made some mistakes, but that didn’t make him any better or worse in this particular scenario than Kit’s sister.

Incensed by everything Kit had said and done thus far, Claudia was reaching bewilderment before the second year referred to her brother using words that made no sense to the fourth year. She had absolutely no idea whatsoever in what context Danny might be an alien experiment of any calibre, and was too taken aback by this point to speak.

For a few short moments she simply stared at Kit. “Please don’t touch me again,” Claudia finally said in a strained voice, trying to keep her composure in so crowded a venue. That brief semblance of control apparently provided her with the presence of mind to address the more pressing issue. “They are not perfect,” she contradicted evenly. “The very fact that they are no longer together should indicate this to you,” she said with as much patience as she could muster. “Kit, Danny is going to marry a respectable girl of traceable magical lineage from a refined society, and in fact - ” if Danny wasn’t going to tell people about it, then Claudia may as well, “he is already considering a betrothal offer from a girl much more suitable than your sister. This is none of your business.”
