I believe in you

“Do all these meals have to be super vegan, or is it cool to bring a bit of fish along once in a while?” Leo asked. Myffi paused to consider. They’d only had one meal before, and there hadn’t been that much to work with, because the club had only been running a few months, and it had been vegan. That didn’t necessarily mean that all the meals had to be. Myfanwy maintained a vegan diet herself, but she wasn't opposed to eating eggs or milk or other animal products if she knew where they had come from and that the animals were enjoying their existence rather than being shut in overcrowded coops or cages without ever seeing daylight. She wouldn’t object to those things being added to their own harvest for Agriclub meals (actually wouldn’t it be cool to keep chickens, too? Although if she could convince Toby to only have free range eggs in school anyway that wouldn’t be so necessary). Therefore if she could source some sustainably farmed fish it would probably be okay to include that in the meal, if the members wanted to do that, even though almost a hundred percent of fish farmed for consumption died from suffocation, and didn’t sound like a great way to go.

“That would probably be fine,” Myffi nodded. “Just because I’m vegan, that doesn’t mean you can’t grow your own organic food and still eat meat,” she reasoned aloud. Consumption was only a small part of the club, anyway; most of it was about taking care of the plants, trying out new ways to keep them healthy and promote growth, and the satisfaction of successful nurturing from seed to harvest.

It sounded like Leo had also been somewhere warm over summer, but that was most places in this hemisphere at this time of year. She was surprised to hear that he was cutting down on Quidditch though. “Oh really?” Myffi queried. She could ask why, but she wasn’t sure she knew Leo well enough for it to be any of her business. They worked together in class sometimes and had occasionally interacted socially but honestly Leo was always sort of grumpy so there were people Myffi preferred to spend her time with. He could elaborate if he wanted to. “I still haven’t decided if I want to sign up,” she mused. “It looks fun but I’m really not very good so I don’t know if I’d be any help.” Though she had been under the assumption that Lyra had a full team already; if Leo wasn’t going to play perhaps she should try out? “I’ll see who else signs up and think about it,” she decided.

Leo mentioned annoying family members, and Myffi could sort of relate to that. She made an expression that could be interpreted as sympathetic. “I kind of get that,” she said with a shrug. “I mean my family weren’t annoying, but we moved to this commune in California, and there are just so many people there all the time. They’re really nice,” Myffi quickly defended her family’s cohabitors, “but I don’t really know them that well. It made me miss Wales,” she admitted. It wasn’t hot there, and there were people she had known her whole life - not just a few months - and her friends were there. Myffi tugged on her friendship bracelets for a moment before smiling brightly again. “I’m looking forward to having my own room again,” she said, her momentary nostalgia already overcome.
