Danny sat back down in his seat, having very little idea what just happened. He didn’t expect Claudia to be so opposed to him dating before he’d even mentioned a name, and even then he hadn’t expected her to virtually implode; knew that Claudia and Holland were friends. They’d bonded over make-up and hairstyles, and other things Danny had no knowledge of and limited interest in. It occurred to him now that Claudia had liked Marissa, too, until she’d dated Danny. If his sister was arbitrarily going to dislike everyone he dated on principle that was going to prove tiresome. But it couldn’t be that alone, because she was genuinely upset - nothing less would make her cry like that where other people could see her. Claudia had always been very private about her emotions, and perhaps that’s why Danny had been so surprised by them.

His thoughts elsewhere, the Lyra distractedly dished a segment of roasted squash onto the empty plate in front of him. He prodded it dispassionately with his fork, wondering whether he had any appetite after all, and then instantly, inexplicably, Ruben was sitting where Claudia had been moments ago. His mood was jarringly incongruous with Danny’s own, which was more disorienting than annoying. Also he had foliage in his hair, on which, had Danny been in possession of his wits at that moment, he definitely would have commented, but all he felt compelled to do was listen disinterestedly as Ruben prattled on about seventh year, Quidditch, and his ex - Ah.

When he’d been anxiously contemplating telling their friends (and his family) about them dating, Danny had never once thought about discussing the matter with Ruben. Why would he? They got on well enough these days, but they weren’t friends: he had no reason to consider how Ruben might react. Except, of course, that when Ruben had gotten involved with Danny’s ex, they’d… had a disagreement. Still, this was different. Holland and Ruben hadn’t been a couple since towards the end of fifth year, and while they still flirted together, Ruben’s face spent enough time attached to Kaye’s recently that Danny assumed it was a non-issue. Although as Ruben had brought the matter to his attention, Danny shifted his focus from his own meagre meal and instead watched Ruben aggressively eat salad.

“What is not to like about your life? Aside from making your very nice, very fragile sister cry, you bully.”

Apart from the uncertainty of his future and eventual wrath of pureblood society? If his own sister had reacted so negatively, Danny dread to think how others might respond. Yet Ruben was right: while he had made his sister cry - he hadn’t meant to upset her, didn’t really understand why she’d reacted like that, and wasn’t sure he’d necessarily call her very nice or very fragile after that exchange - Danny’s life was otherwise pretty great right now. All the seventh years had uncertainty about their futures, in different ways, and he was hardly the first teenager to quarrel with his family about his date.

Danny didn’t balk under Ruben’s glare, holding his gaze while he scooped out a forkful of squash. “I guess my life is pretty sweet,” he retorted shamelessly, then ate the food on his fork. He gestured to Ruben with the empty utensil. “You’ve got something stuck in your hair.”

  • Heeeey Danny boy! - Ruben Lundqvist, Mon Feb 12 23:49
At this exact moment, Ruben couldn’t entirely tell where his hair ended and his salad began. This was an unusual experience and also one that he was absolutely fine with. The Drama Club overall had... more

      • Betcha thought I wasn't coming back - Ruben, Sun Feb 25 00:08
He immediately interpreted the way that Danny resumed eating his squash as an attempt to mimic his own intimidation-eating. Pfft. Squash was not a food with even the possibility of being... more
        • I had faith in you - Danny, Mon Feb 26 15:24
It was tough to get along with Ruben. Even when the two seventh years didn’t have any particular quarrel, Danny found that the Swede just intentionally tried to make it difficult for people to like... more
          • Concealed threats, despite being one of his primary skill sets, was not actually what he had been going for here. So the fact that Danny’s first response was to laugh was annoying, to say the least.... more
            • Well that was uncalled for - Danny, Tue Feb 27 20:28
Sure, Danny could handle a threat from someone who was seventeen. However he doubted a few months on his side made up for Ruben’s pro-violence approach to conflict. He either hadn’t understood the... more
              • But surely not a surprise - Ruben, Thu Mar 1 22:52
Danny’s face had the expression of someone trying very hard not to have any expression at all. The other boy was failing, obviously, because Ruben had spent literally over a decade tangled up in... more

"If you're just looking for a fight-" If? Hah. He was pretty much always looking for a fight. There was not much point in day-to-day life if the majority of those days didn't contain something to... more
