But surely not a surprise

Danny’s face had the expression of someone trying very hard not to have any expression at all. The other boy was failing, obviously, because Ruben had spent literally over a decade tangled up in physical altercations and seven of those years in formal training for the same. His skills at interpreting body language were pretty finely honed, and so he picked up immediately on the muscle twitch under the cheek as a sign of jaw-clenching emotion. Possibly one of the fun emotions, like rage. Possibly a more boring emotion, like annoyance. Either way, any reaction was a good reaction, in Ruben’s world, and he allowed himself a moment of (internalized, jovisst, he wasn’t a child) smugness.

The fact that Danny, of all people, was telling him to mind his own business was such an ironic twist that he couldn’t hold back a snort of amusement. That whole lame, un-sneaky series of attempts at separating himself from Holland back when they had been dating was a hell of a lot stronger example of interference than what he was up to right now. Really, the only person whose mouth it would’ve been more ironic coming out of was Emmett. (Emmett was also, somehow, the only person who he would have been less inclined to smash in the mouth of, should comparable ironies and/or insults been expressed by both Lyras. This was mostly because Emmett was Holland’s best friend or something. But also partially because Rose was dating him. The kid’s relationships with those two made absolutely no sense, and Ruben knew better than to question it to their faces - although not to Emmett’s because hah, Emmett, seriously?)

He snorted again at Danny’s later interjections. ‘Hunting for bigots’. Now that was a funny image. Creep around the woods, trap a few bigots, string them up in chains… Come to think of it, he was relatively confident that kind of plot would be more appealing than half the ‘put the Muggle in the Nature!’ television garbage shows that Dagny’s boyfriend watched for seemingly the single purpose of mocking the stupidity of all parties involved, with the exception of the Nature, of course. Nej, scratch that - he was relatively confident that even Meatless Myffi could be convinced to get on board with a bigot-hunting series.

“Oh, did you think I was threatening you for Holland?” he snarked back innocently. “No wonder you are getting so prickly. Don’t worry, Dar-danny-us, I have complete faith in Holland. We know each other very well.” There was a definite smirk on Ruben’s face. It got a little sharper as he continued, “I am threatening you for you. You are an okay person, but not so smart. If you cannot finish a meal with your dear baby sister over this-” okay, he had no proof that Danny’s supposed new boyfriend status had been the subject of Claudia’s running away, but surely it was a fair guess “-and you are not lasting very well now, either-” Ruben shrugged and, openly grinning now in contrast to the serious words, announced “Well, you are screwed. Good luck.” (‘Screwed’ was the censored version. But Ruben never censored himself and continued to not do that now.)

It was inexplainably strange that Holland was into Danny. Would be easier to assume Heather was talking out of another part of her anatomy, but it actually made more sense for her to be truthful since she had singled out him to brag at. Danny’s responses throughout their conversation had confirmed it, anyways. No point hoping otherwise. Similarly, it would be easier to assume that Holland had been drugged, hypnotized, or possessed, and yet that all made less than no sense on account of Holland being Holland. All that said, as much as it irked him to admit (because Danny was a decent guy but not nearly good enough for Holland) (he was entitled to this opinion since he had dated them first), Holland had clearly made some kind of intelligent choice about this, and he would support them. And also attempt to make sure Danny knew exactly where he stood, at least in his own opinion.

Sure, Danny could handle a threat from someone who was seventeen. However he doubted a few months on his side made up for Ruben’s pro-violence approach to conflict. He either hadn’t understood the... more
