Celebrating turkeys or whatever [Emmett]

Sometimes Rose went to the Thanksgiving feast hosted by the staff and sometimes Rose didn’t; it was entirely dependent on if her American friends were insistent or not. Rose was just as happy spending the time on Pearl Street or in the library, but Marissa had insisted more than once that Rose come celebrate with her family, and Rose hadn’t objected. For whatever reason that hadn’t happened this year; maybe it was an oversight or maybe Marissa just didn’t want to spend time with her. Rose knew she had been stressed about university but all of her applications were in and done, but things hadn’t returned to normal with Marissa. Some days it even seemed like her best friend was avoiding her, which made Rose uncomfortable and a little bit upset. After mentioning this to Emmett, he had suggested that Rose come to Thanksgiving with his family. Rose had agreed. It wasn’t the same as spending time with Marissa, but Rose had tentatively and begrudgingly grown emotionally attached to Emmett and his stupid puffskein.

And she wouldn’t admit it, but Rose had put extra effort into her outfit today. She was still wearing her usual boots, but her black shirt was a little fancier and she had picked out a choker she didn’t usually wear. Jewelry wasn’t really Rose’s thing so she felt a little awkward with it, but she thought that it looked pretty good so she had left her room before she had the chance to talk herself out of wearing it.

In the actual Finer Diner there was generalized chaos. Rose was a little late - she’d wanted to skip Mr. Tennant’s spiel about the importance of Thanksgiving - so maybe it was to be expected, but there were quite a few small children running about, and Rose wasn’t sure they were all staff kids. On top of that, it looked like Professor Boot was hoarding pies for a contest of some sort (yeah, right). It took a minute for Rose to find Emmett and his family, but there they were; she took a deep breath, fruitlessly smoothed her curly blonde hair, and walked over to them.

“Happy Thanksgiving,” she said, once she was in earshot. “Hi, Emmett,” she added, feeling her stomach give the awkward flip it had started doing when she saw him recently. This was such a strange situation. Not as strange as Marissa’s new friendship with Russell, but if Russell weren’t around, Rose’s relationship with Emmett would have easily been the weirdest thing their friend group had come up with recently, even counting whatever was going on between Danny and Holland. Rose didn’t know what else to say to Emmett’s family. “I hope your travels went well,” was what Rose ended up saying, even though it sounded stupid.
