It was plain to Danny that Ruben was going to hold him personally responsible for any hypothetical harm that came Holland’s way (this was not at all surprising; of course Ruben would blame Danny for that - even Danny would blame himself for that), but his manner was no longer threatening. In fact Danny had cause to laugh again as Ruben called him a child. Danny was currently the oldest student attending RMI, which only proved that age was not a reliable indicator of maturity. Nor was it a predictor of antagonism: Danny was opposed to violence generally, and that had not changed as he’d gotten older. There were inevitably some much younger students who would be more predisposed to using violence or aggression to settle a dispute. Meanwhile Dardanius knew very well that a harmless wall of bubbles would be more annoying to Ruben than any spell or physical manoeuvre designed to threaten or inflict any kind of harm. Similarly,he might have predicted that Ruben would react contentiously: he set the bubbles aflame.

The Lyra was just starting to wonder how long they could sit here having the same argument - Ruben was evidently never going to accept that Danny was prepared to fight for Holland if necessary - when the student opposite said something that didn’t immediately register as a threat, insult, or degradation. That was odd. Danny wasn’t used to be addressed by Ruben with anything akin to respect, so he was caught completely off guard by what sounded like an unprecedented gift of acknowledgement, acceptance, and allegiance combined (delivered as a threat, of course, but crucially it was not made against Dardanius, but on his behalf). ‘Unexpected’ did not sufficiently account for this twist. Today was weird.

He wasn’t sure quite what to say to that, so Danny said nothing as Ruben summoned more food for himself, but his expression altered perceptibly from contemplative surprise to tentative contentment. He had never understood why Holland was still friends with Ruben (and had mentioned this on at least a couple of occasions), but, for the first time ever, he was pleased that they were. He was also thankful that Ruben spoke again, his intonation indicating their original conversation was now closed, mercifully relieving Danny of the obligation to find something appropriate to say. He didn’t even mind that Ruben was making fun of his animagus form; he wasn’t the first and almost certainly wouldn’t be the last to do so. Danny smiled ruefully in response; running a race against Ruben while transformed would be as ridiculous as the fabled hare and the tortoise.

"Rabbit cake for the rabbit man?" Ruben offered the dessert to Danny. He didn’t usually eat dessert, he didn’t have much of a sweet tooth and had already had a fruity sorbet with Holland earlier, but as the Aquila was pointing out, the zucchini loaf was made of ‘vegetables and stuff.’ If the food had been on Ruben’s plate, Danny would have felt hugely uncomfortable eating it, but as he was being offered to take his own slice from the serving plate, Danny decided to accept. Essentially Ruben had just sided with him and Holland against potential resistance from the pureblood cult, so the least Danny could do was eat some damn zucchini bread. He broke off half a slice and ate it.

“Better than I expected,” he agreed. “Today’s just full of surprises.”

"If you're just looking for a fight-" If? Hah. He was pretty much always looking for a fight. There was not much point in day-to-day life if the majority of those days didn't contain something to... more
