Myfanwy Owen
Thankful for some company

She had been at the school last year when Thanksgiving had happened, but she’d only been there a few weeks by then, and there had been the weird fake baby project going on, and Myfanwy didn’t really have any proper friends yet, and there wasn’t a big family event like this year, so the occasion hadn’t really registered for the Lyra before now. As far as she could tell, the American holiday was like an excuse to eat too much food and say what you were thankful for, which made a pretty good premise for a holiday, until you started to think about all the invasion and oppression of the indigenous people, and then it was just kind of weird. Anyway, Myffi had written home to tell her family - her actual family, not all the people in the commune, who were Muggles, and not part of Myffi’s life at all really apart from a couple of weeks in the winter and a couple of months over the summer - to tell them about the event, and her Dad had actually decided to come alone. Her Mam was a Muggle, and even after years of being married to Dafydd and raising Cledan and Myfanwy, she still seemed to find large congregations of magical people unnerving, so she would be staying at the commune where they didn’t celebrate thanksgiving or any other public holidays, really, and Cledan had said it sounded like a terrible way to spend an afternoon. Myffi thought she had a point. There was definitely more food available for her to eat at school these days, but the people were just going to be teenagers and their families, and Cledan was seven years older than Myfanwy, and happily living in California with her boyfriend. There was really no good reason for her to want to come to a holiday she didn’t celebrate with people she didn’t know.

It had been fun to show her Dad around school anyway, starting with the allotment outside that was looking in great shape thanks to the efforts of the AgriClub, and Myffi told him about her presentation to the Board of Governors, and Meatless Mondays, and she showed him some of her more recent artwork and sketches, and he totally just seemed really pleased to be there, which was really the best part of the occasion. Her Dad had absolutely wanted to talk to Toby, too, because they had both actually been to Hogwarts and in Hufflepuff House at the same time, and also because he wanted to be enthusiastic about all the changes that were taking place in the school since Myfanwy and the new Headmaster had been able to collaborate ideas. When an opportunity arose, Myffi made a quick introduction and told Dafydd she’d go find a seat so they could get some food together when he was done chatting.

Several minutes later, Myffi was bored of sitting on her own, looking wistfully at the food that she wasn’t eating because her Dad was still talking to someone, although whether it was still Toby or if he’d moved on to chat with someone else the sixth year couldn’t be sure, as there were too many people milling about in her line of sight. She idly twisted a strand of her almost-black hair around her finger, tugging it from where it was firmly secured in a ponytail high on the back on her head. It was a much better distraction for her idle hands than tugging at the yellow ribbon embroidery she had added herself to the denim pinafore dress she was wearing over a pale yellow long sleeved top - she’d almost pulled some of the stitches so switched to her hair instead.

“Come on, Dad,” she muttered under her breath as her stomach clenched uncomfortably, requesting she eat something soon. Myffi was so thankful when another person arrived at the table to distract her, she didn’t even care who it was, she gave an exceptionally welcoming smile. “There’s plenty of room here,” she invited cheerfully in her Welsh accent. Seriously if her Dad didn’t come back soon she was going to start eating without him.
