The rhythmic click-clacking of Kaye’s heels across the Diner floor gave Danny the few seconds warning he needed to lean back from his plate before Kaye’s utensil ‘accidentally’ skewered his head or hand on its way to inevitably liberating something from his plate. This time it was a large chestnut mushroom sauteed in garlic that had been alongside the poached salmon and spinach leaves the seventh year was still enjoying. He didn’t even bother to raise an eyebrow as Kaye sat down opposite him: stealing his food was just how she liked to greet him. Danny was used to it now.

In fact he was sort of used to everything about Kaye by now, which wouldn’t have occurred to him as a possibility two years ago. It felt as though she still liked to talk to him mostly through insults, but Danny was getting more adept at finding the compliments buried beneath layers of sass and swears. He brought her magsci notes and assignments when she was too tired to make it to class, and he brought her food when he found her asleep in the library so she’d have something to eat when she woke up. In return she didn’t put food back onto his plate when she’d already taken a bite out of it. Most of the time.

Considering their current dynamic, which could, Danny supposed, most closely be described as friendship (she had introduced him to her Dads at Thanksgiving as one of her friends, which was the first time Danny had considered the concept; he didn’t argue with the descriptor), he wasn’t surprised that Kaye asked if he was okay. He was, incidentally, a great deal less surprised that she had heard about his eventful midterm, because they had friends in common and because Kaye shared a room with Heather. “I’m fine,” he said truthfully, after swallowing his mouthful. “Don’t worry about it.” Not that he expected she would, but his dismissal allowed her to drop the topic immediately if she wanted to. He would be fine with that decision. “You okay? Have a good midterm?”

              • I have no response - Kaye, Mon Apr 16 10:23
The idea that Ruben might be difficult to accept made her chuckle. She was clearly fond of Ruben. Sometimes, the sixth year couldn’t believe her luck at coming to Rocky Mountain International. She... more
